were any very early panthers painted grey or was yellow the standard colour by the time of thier introduction?

I think that germany had introduced the dunkelgelb colour as standard, before the introduction of the panther, so there are no grey panthers! So german yellow or camo is the norm. Im useless at time lines so spmebody might have the acurate dates, but Im pretty sure that grey was never used!

I concur. I even remember reading that by the time they were introduced the factory primer wasn't even gray--it was a dark red/brown. If that is the case then you couldn't even use the gray as an undercoat in worn or battle damaged areas of the vehicle.

thanks for the info, just wondered, a grey panther might have looked quite unusual!

Welllll, according to the references I have, which are Jentz' Panther:Quest for combat Supremacy, and the Squadron In action Panther book, there were Grey Panthers. I couldn't tell you exact tanks or units, but the In Action book has a color profile of one.
With German WW II armor, there are almost no "Nevers." Towards the end of the war, each tank was made with whatever was at hand. Maybe other Armoramers can give you more specifics.
HTH,
Scott

The first Panthers (Ausf D) in 1943 were painted in overall Dunkelgelb, but you can find some vehicles with an overspray of Schokoladenbraun or Olivgrun. Also they used Zimmeritt paste. You can find grey Panthers by the end of the war because of the shortages of paint
