Can someone please tell me whether this Merkava Mk IIID is grey, a darker shade of the usual sand colour, or that dark grey-green colour that appears every now and then? I'm just having a hard time telling what colour it is because of the reallt bad resolution of the photo.

help would be much apreciated

Maybe this vehicle is a prototype painted green as the one quoted in this thread:

Other thread on the topic:

The IDF vehicle color since mid seventies onwards a is grayish sand color equivalent to Humbrol 84, itīs not green but can appear to be so under certain light conditions.
For Tamiya acrylics I think a 50/50 mix of XF-20 medium grey and XF-57 Buff or two parts medium grey and one XF-49 khaki are OK. I donīt know mixes for other paint makers.

Hope this helps

Hi Mate,Over here in the UK a Company called White Ensign Models does a ready mixed tinlet of "Sinai Grey".I hav`nt used it yet but it`s got to be easier than trying to mix your own.
I know they post overseas so it be worthwile checking it out to see if it`s for you.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I've found it really hard to apply sand brown paint to sand brown plastic, so I was looking for an alternative. Not only that, but I've now found that its not even supposed to be sand brown.

Mario,

What is a factory truck near Ben-Gurion?

Cesar,
Your 84 recommendation as base color is perfect.

The Model Master Isreali sand/gray that tanknick22 described is what I used on my Merkava III with mine roller in the braille scale forum. I think it looks pretty realistic. Have a look. If MM paints are available in your neck of the woods, I would strongly recommend it. No problems going on thinned down. Cheers!

Hi Dean,
you have one of the toughest colors there is to recreate
there, hereīs my recipe for a worn version:
Humbrol enamels: H121 5 parts H179 5-7 parts (depends on the
fading grade you want) and H67 1-2 parts. Hereīs a couple
of pictures including the paint jar and 2 from the Merkava 1
at the tank museum in Munster Germany. Hope they help.

The model master color is a little greener, but you can regulate that with the H179.

The best color I have found is Valejo Air Light Grey Green #044. I am really happy with the effect this paint gives.

Example:

I know its different on the computer, but it looks really good in person. Good luck!
