This is what I do:
1. Paint the item with Testor's enamel "wood" colour (yes it looks cheesy, but wait....)
2. When fully dry, coat with future or another ACRYLIC clear coat.
3. apply a wash of thinner and Burnt Umber oil paint to the wood item. This can be applied heavy or thick depending on how dark you want your wood. I use a flat brush and apply the wash in strokes going only one way to make a simulated wood grain.
4. Let dry and your done.
