That's a good question!

I've already built and painted most of a miniature of this armored car - but held off because I could not find a photo supporting this color plate.

Here is a link to discussion about it, and other armored cars from Vietnam, with the same nickname:

Thanks Jim

About the colour, well there is a review about the M706 commando car in Miltary Model International and the auther mentions "The Unexpected" V100 being Semi gloss black

But! I am not sure on that one.

Thanks very much for the help

Here is a very slow WIP of The Unexpected that I based on the Squadron illustration. Sorry, it's a little dusty. It's the Verlinden big block of resin, I still need to pick up the Hobby Boss kit. There are some more unpainted shots in my gallery.

http://gallery.kitmaker.net/showphoto.php/photo/304555

I've never come across photos that showed it configured exactly as in the Squadron book but here are a couple shots of various incarnations.

The second photo show "The Unexpected" on the left.

"Unexpected" is the second from the bottom. Maybe 2 M60 in the rear and the post for the one up front, but no mount for the .50.

Notice in the first photo it is "The Unexpected" and in the second it is just "Unexpected". Also check out "Passport to Hell" as it appears to be armed close to the Squadron illustration.

The unexpected was in fact painted black. The MP's used our formula of Dark Green and gloss black to paint it. The few V100's that were used for convoy escort were eventually all p[ainted this way. the 100's that were used around Saigon were left in their original colors of dark green and white markings.

Unfortunately I based mine on the Verlinden directions and an old Military Modeler Magazine which called for Field Blue. Mine is way too blue for even that. Maybe if I ever get around to doing some weathering I can tone it down so it comes across closer to the gloss black+dark green.

I was wondering this same thing. Did they use M1919 .30 cal, or sonthing else? The M1919 used the same ammo as the M1 Grand, 30.06 and the M60 MG's use 7.62 NATO. They are different rounds, so they would have to carry 2 different types of .30 cal ammo?

Concords book show both were used but it would depend on which vehicle you are modeling but most seam to have the 7.62 M60

Everything was rechambered for 7.62 in the late `50s. On the early M706, they used the M37 M.G.

I was not aware any US M706 were fitted with the M37. ARVN XM706 were, but one of the key differences between that vehicle and the XM706E1/M706 was the refitting of the M73 (specifically because of the ammunition commonality issue). While sources report the rechambering of M37s in 7.62x51mm, I've not seen anything concrete to back this up.

In fact, pictures exist of the continued usage of .30-06 M1919 variants, especially by the USMC. The only US Army elements that would have had M37s on hand were Air Cavalry units (for the XM1 armament system for the OH-13/OH-23 helicopter). The M48A2 and M48A3 both used the M73 instead of the M1919A4E1, as did the M132.

The USMC on the other hand used the M37 on its M48s, the M1919A4 on the LVTP5 and M50, and was still issuing BARs in 1965 on a very limited level, making the issue of getting proper ammunition much easier. The USMC in fact chose a subvariant of the M60, the M60E2, over the M73 in their M48s (and I believe in their M60s).

Later they started using the M73 M.G., which had flash hiders:

Thanks Gary, you learn something new every day. I didn't know that they were rechambered. It stand to reason that they would do that, so that you wouldn't have two different types of .30 cal ammo.

Well, since you want to split hairs, the virst vehicles used by U.S. M.P.s were XM-706s using M37s.

These "first" vehicles were borrowed from the ARVN, so were ARVN XM706s using M37s. They were quickly traded in for XM706E1/M706 types.

As to everything being rechambered in the late 1950s, there was a lot of testing, but very little was actually put into service. The Navy's Mk 21 is one of the few examples that was actually fielded, and they actually put some small number of rechambered Garands (Mk 2 rifles) into service as well. Most of the Army's tests of Garand's and BARs rechambered in 7.62x51mm never made it into any sort of service.

Still, .30-06 weapons continued to be in use into the Vietnam period. While the USMC's usage of the BAR and M1919 types is most obvious, the USAF and US Army usage of the M37 (on the AC-47 and XM1 armament subsystem respectively) deserves a note.
