Hey, quick question

I am looking for a 1/48 Tamiya german soft skin to share a diorama with a Panther G. Out of all of Tamiya's vehicles and trucks, are there any that one could use as a supply vehicle? All of my options seem to be people carriers.
The concept of the diorama is to have a truck or halftrack supplying the Panther with fresh ammo and/or gas. Is this a practice that ever happened in the field?

Thanks

Tamiya just re-issued the Italeri 3ton 4x2 truck, I suppose that would work. #89782

And I would think that your idea would be okay, they had to get supplies somehow.

One Tamiya plus a couple of others....

- Calibre 48 has an Opel Blitz cargo truck: 1/48 Opel Blitz

- Tamiya also has a 1/48 Kubelwagen (good for more than a few jerry cans of petrol, I'm sure): 1/48 Kubelwagen

- AFV Club has a 1/48th Sd.Kfz.251/1 halftrack reviewed right here on Armorama: 1/48 AFV Club Halftrack

Hope that gets you started...

Another option might be the Tamiya Krupp Protze
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=32534

The Kubel seems a bit small, and I don't think they would have used a 251 for delivering supplies.

You could also look for one of the old Bandai Opel Mautier kits. That could be a bit expensive, though.

thanks for the help guys,

What about a Kettenkraftrad or Steyr 1500A/01? Otherwise, I think the Krupp Protze will do fine.
And thanks for the heads up on the 1/48 AFV Club stuff. Even though I probably won't include the 251 in the diorama, I'll have to get one anyway to see if they're any good.

Have you thought about a captured Soviet truck?

I didn't, but now that you mention it, it sounds like a good idea. My diorama is going to be depicting the Western Front, though. Did the Wermacht capture as much American equipment as they did the Russians?

Re-supplying ammo was done by truck, half track or ammo Panzer.

And basically, if anything suited the terrain, and had ample stowage room, it was used. And for inspiration, there are nice pictures of such activities in Tiger und seine Abarten, showing a 251 delivering ammo to a Tiger-E in the field.

I've also seen a pic of a Tiger-E strewn full with shells on the hull deck, during re-arming. Not exactly the safest way...

Generally, I would say "no." There simply wasn't that much time when the Germans weren't on-the-run fleeing the Anglo-American forces. That's not to say "never," but it would be less-common than on the Eastern front, where the Wehrmacht gobbled up trucks, tanks, lend-lease equipment, etc.

Yes, there is a Sherman "Beutepanzer" out in several scales, but that's an Eastern Front Lend-Lease item.

If you do an Afrika Korps diorama, YES! Rommel's advance to El Alamein was upon British vehicles burning British gas. Afrika Korps researchers please correct or confirm this, but I read that about 60% of A.K.'s softskins of the time were captured, while after Kasserine Pass, about 80% of wheeled and halftrack transport was US/UK-made.

Thanks for all the help guys. I should have the dio done in about a month, and I'll post it on the forums here. And Fred, I remember seeing pics of whole DAK halftrack columns made up of M2s and M3s with a couple 251s thrown into let us know whos column it is. Creates a need for one of those new DML halftracks....

well your best bet for a supply vehicle in north afrika would be either an Oplel blitz, a british "screamer" truck (not shure if thre is a model of this in O scale) or a ford V-3000 truck. hope ur dio turns out well.
