I have bought two new kits today:

The Tamiya Panzer IV J (35181) and Tamiya Jagdpanther late (35203).

  • What are the differences between the Panzer IV Ausf H and J ? I would like to use a zimmerit kit. Yet Atak has only a kit for the Panzer IV H. Is it usable ?

  • What is a good AM barrel for the Jagdpanther ? As the CMK-barrel is supposedly only for the early version. I have seen the Barrel Depot version. What is the verdict on that one ? What are other versions to use ?

As you can see, my library is not growing as fast as my kit-collection... Can someone help me out ? Thanks in advance...

Hey there,
If you got the Tamiya J it's an early model and it was possible that it did have zimmerit... but not many of them got it.

The easiest way to tell an H from a J is to look for the "extra" muffler on the rear of the H... the early J's even had a plate just welded over the spot for the turret traverse engine muffler.

There were other differences introduced later in the "J" series including vertical mufflers... and other minor cosmetic differences.

So, get the Atak zimmerit... it's very nice and fits the kit.

As far as the Jagdpanther Barrel, look for the "stepped" or "two piece" jagdpanther "Late" barrel by CMK... I built two Jagdpanthers recently with this barrel.

Later,
Tim

Tank shack hit a home run. I've got the Pz IV-H late and am using some cavalier Zimmerit. Got a real good deal on just the non specified sheets rather than the specific tank. Have gotten a Cavilier set for my K-Tiger Henscel and really like the look of the Caviler. I too used the same barrel for my Jagdpanther. real simple to use, and very cost effective.

Guess it is going to be the ATAK zimmerit set then... and then put a piece of plastic over the place of the muffler (just as if welded over...what tankshack suggests).

I have already ordered the barrels for both.... And interior sets for the Pz IV.

Thanks...

Note to self: This fall, spend money on literature, and first finish your kits on the shelf now...... Only other kit to be bought: new Italery Sd.Kfz 10/5
