What Tamiya color would best represent the red primer that the germans used on their WW2 tanks. Thanks in advance for any input.

Bruce,
Tamiya's Hull Red (XF-9) should do the trick as well.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Tamiya Hull Red represents a red lead primer as used on ship bottoms. The German red oxide primer was much lighter, more of a brick red. I suppose you could cut the Hull Red with a little German Dark Yellow. Humbrol's Brick Red enamel is actually a decent match, though possibly a little light.

Bruce,
I mix a very small amount of Tamiya brown (X-9) into Tamiya flat red (XF-7) to alter the red color just enough to have it come out looking like the red oxide primer seen in many of the photograhs found here in this discussion (link below) concerning the actual red oxide primer color as used the German WWII vehicles / tanks. I also mix in Tamiya clear (X-22) to add a little semi gloss sheen to the paint, this helps with the pin washes.

Lots of reading but worth the information contained in this posting. Follow some of the links to see some acutual color photograhs of German vehicles in Finnish service.
