I can seem to locate a copy of “Hard Ride” which to my understanding is the quintessential book on Vietnam gun trucks. But Squadron’s soft-cover book is still available. Does anyone have the squadron book and is it worth picking up a copy? Also, if any of you can point me in the direction of any good references I may be overlooking you help will be greatly appreciated.
Take care,
Noah

Trying to find a copy of the "Hard Ride" is next to impossible. Mother loaned me his once.
ONCE.
I actually returned it in a timely manner.
The Squadron book is okay for some reference.

Finding copies of the second volume is easier (and while not as good as the first volume from what I hear should still be picked up). I would pay top dollar for a copy of the first volume if I saw it simply because I knew the chance would not come again.

hi Noah,
Indeed the Hard Ride is hard to get your hands on unfortunately (I believe there might be a reprint one day, depending on the demand) I don’t know the Squadron book but here’s a few links that might be of interest:

ps guess where to look for guntruck decals...(available this month)

Thank you for the links Mark!
I’ve seen you make reference to producing decals for gun trucks before. Do you have a web site where you’ll be selling them? Will you be producing any for AFV Club’s Quad 50? No offense to the brave crew of “Nancy” but I’m not to wild about that paint scheme…
Thanks again to all those who responded,
Noah

Squadron's book is actually pretty good, especially for the money. Pick it up.
As for the Hard Ride, all of the comments made by others in this thread are pretty much true. There are serious plans to re-print the 1st Volume of the Hard Ride, but there are some "difficulties" in doing so. Someday though, we should hopefully see it reprinted.

Hi Noah,
My site: www.mecmodels.com
next week I'll have 2 sets of guntruck-decals available (with decals for several trucks) and in april there will be 2 more sets. There won't be any quad 50 truck decals however but if the decals will prove to be a succes I certainly will keep this in mind!
best regards
Mark

Hi Mark,
Your decals looks good. But I thing that complete markings for each truck were more usefull.
You give us the art box but each vehicle has their own and specific markings.
I try them when tyou can provides them

Hey Mark –
I think you site and decals look terrific! You’re certainly helping to fill a huge void, as far as I’m concerned, by providing us with some marking options for the vehicles of the Vietnam War.
My only suggestion would be to maybe incorporate a larger image of the decals so customers can see what they are ordering a little more closely
While I’m not sure any of your gun truck options will work with the AFV Club M35 kit I have, I’ll absolutely be ordering some of your sets designed for the V100’s, M113’s, and AMTRACKS!
And I have to say, your ceramic Vietnam arch sure looks like the ideal background for the ARVN M41 I’m working on now – I’ll be ordering soon!
Take care and keep up the good work,
Noah

They would most definitely work with your AFV M35 kit, even better with the Nancy gun truck. All that is needed is to build up the armor box for which decals your using. A few other small items needed would be AVF ammo box set to fill and line the bed with, some 50’s and or maybe Legend’s resin mini gun.

Joe you're not totaly right.
The Mafia is a 2.5 tons truck
The Bat Hombre, Baby Sitter,Cold Sweat, are 5 tons trucks.
For the 5 tonner, the M925/M923 Italeri kit is needed

Yep I did sort of got it wrong, but The Bad Hombre and Cold Sweat did start out at one time as 2 1/2 ton trucks.
Joe
Edit: I just went into my references and it was "Cold Sweat Jr." that was a 2 1/2.

Hi,
I agree with Pascal, Bad Hombre and Cold Sweat are a 5 ton M54.
I think that decals for GT is also bumper codes, serial number, stencil data.........
This find for correct set is very hard work because one bed have two or three
truck chassis. Dimension and fonts of bumper code no the same for all vehicles.

I was a gunner on Babysitter in 1972 at Camp Eagle. Left country in late Aug 1972. Can you tell me what happened to the Babysitter ???
I used to have some photos but can't find them after the many moves since that time. Was in the 8th RRFS incountry.
Thanks.

A few months ago I bought both versions thru Amazon. There was a vendor in CA who had NOS of both. Vol 1 had slight water damage that stuck the corners of a few pages together, but nothing that affected the photos or info.

Volume 1 of the Hard Ride was reprinted just over a year ago. I know it had taken some time to do sort out the reprint, but just checked my emails and confirmed arrival of my copy from James Lyles in August 2009.
He may still have copies, but i'm not sure
