Hello, without sounding out the obvious which I'm about too, I brought a grass roll matt for a diorama, its too flat, and basically, other than placing an aircraft, tank, anything that requires a flat surface, this would be fine, then I noticed you can actually buy grass, tuff and even flowers, the information that I read wasn't quite what I expected. So, has anyone actually brought this grass, tuff or these flowers and what do you honestly think of it, do you still need to paint this, I know there are different colours and different hights, and that might seem like a silly question to ask, then again, its very much like pre-painted stuff, I normally paint over it anyway, I'd just like to know how good this stuff is by someone that's used it before and will use it again. Thank you, and look forward to your reply.

I have used the same as you and found it too flat and a bit unrealistic aswell. I seen a review on here by Scott Lodder for a grass mat from Model Scene which looked brilliant but with one major problem it is made in Cech Rep and so far there are no stockists in the UK so will wait in hope. Check out the review though. Other than that i use static grass and flocks at the minute with white glue and sometimes airbrush this .

The tufts and Silfor grass are very nice. You can get either in many heights, color varieties and quantity although they can indeed be painted (airbrushed) to blend or change subtly

The tufts are nice because they can be bunched together to create small areas of solid 'clumpy grass'
The Silfor sheets (grass on a fine web matting is a bit more challenging as you need to cut it and 'fit' it into the scene you're building. It is easy to work with and gives good results.
Cheers,
Charles

Hello Andy, thank you for the reply, I have seen quite a few dio's showing grass up to the knee joint (1-35) and looking good, my wife brought me grass on a roll, and like I said, very flat and lifeless, then as you do, you begin to notice things on other dio's and wonder where they actually buy this stuff from, you read a review but it never really tells you what its like, only how good it is, when you can see clearly see that for yourself, (An American thing) does it require painting afterward, does it hold glue, can you apply easily etc etc and where you can buy this from.

Thank you for that Alan, and Charles, love that flat-bed truck, especially with the grass growing through the floor boards, a great touch, and thanks for the info.

You could try making your own clumps. Go to Poundland or The Works and buy their paint brushes, not the nylon ones, cut them into clumps of different heights and add in amongst your other grass. Once glued in place spray with colour to match/blend with surroundings

Thanks Alec,
The grass clumps in that dio are the "Summer Tone Prairie Tufts" from Mininatur. I got them from Scenic Express

I really like the grass tufts (Silfor?). Here are a couple "In Action" pictures where I used them:

Hi Al, no wonder I was getting so bored building scale model warships, every time I see great dioramas like that, great figures, FX and paint work, I just want to try and build something else, with dio's everything is only limited by imagination. Is there a gallery on this site ? After all, there are so many type of dio I can only imagine the answer being no, but I'd like to ask anyway, really good Lilliputian grass.

On this site you have quite a a few images , mainly WW2, check out the galleries here
http://gallery.kitmaker.net/index.php/cat/522

then you've got the galleries over on Missing Lynx to look through if you want

Should give you plenty of inspiration.
