According to the link below they were deployed in Vietnam. Pretty cool article on how to model one, too.

I beg to differ. We had the truck mounted quad fifties. Along with the god awful 40mm piece of junk Duster. Seems to my aged eyes that the 163 was just starting to be employed in Europe and CONUS in the mid 70's. Vietnam? If they made it there that's a new one on me. Possible, but I am dubious.

I'll do the required 25 push-ups when Kencelot pulls up a picture of one moving down a road in Vietnam. I need the exercise.

DJ,

I really don't know either. My first thought was no. The link below says the Army received their first one in 1969. So if they were there it would have been late. Then I got this quote from an article about the 11th ACR

"New Tools for the Same Job

When Troop D of the "Blackhorse" 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment began a sweep down Route 13 past An Loc, they had a new and powerful weapon especially designed to deal with the enemy. It was the M163 Vulcan, an M-113 specially designed to handle the new "Gatling gun" 20mm cannon. Another new piece of armor was the M551 Sheridan, which was sent to eventually replace the M-113/ACav. It turned out to be a bust, extremely vulnerable to mines.

At this time, the M48 Patton was still the number one piece of heavy armor in Vietnam. The M-60 (except for the bridge layers) would not see service there. As the Troop progressed down the highway, they were raked with a gauntlet of enemy fire. Two APCs burst into flames and there was momentary confusion. The attached Vulcans quickly went into action. On the way to the rescue was Troop F with more of the deadly weapons. The firefight lasted over an hour until enemy forces had enough and made a bloody withdrawal."

M163 Specs

No clue here...

I tend to remember seeing a photo of a Vietnam era M163 in my Squadron Signal Armor in Vietnam book. I'll have to check when I get home tonight.

It was. There are a few photos of the 163's in 'Nam available. Squadron's 'M113 In Action' being one.

IIRC, it was deployed as a test vehicle initially, but worked out quite well, and was quite popular in the ground support mission. The Duster was effective too, but getting old in the tooth and the logistics involved proved to be much easier with the 113 based Vulcan.

All you 'old' guys should have known this easy. Tsk, tsk ,tsk. M163 on convoy support duty. Great close-in defense weapon. Of course we all know that 20 mike mike was only used on equipment and vehicles. Ya know, things like belt buckles and packs. Almost as much fun as 90mm canister and beehive rounds.

And listen to you, carrying on like you believe the old wives' tale about not being able to use 20mm on personnel. Bet you think there is some law of war that says you can't fire .50 cal at personnel as well. Amazes me that these rumors persists to this day.

I was an Army JAG with the 11th ACR the late '80s and the question about using 20mm on personnel occassionally came up. Ironically, as stated, they indeed used Vulcans in Vietnam, and Sabot is quite right that it's just an old wive's tale that it was prohibited, but many officers, in the 1980's at least, believed it anyway.

I remember seeing these at Knox way back when and I left there in '72 Next time was in 75 at Bragg for a firepower demo and they said it had been deployed in Nam in the ground mode. Nasty, nasty little toy
