Okay, here it is…

I’ve seen and heard that Allied tank crews in the PTO often placed sandbags on the rear engine decks of their tanks. However, would they have completely covered the engine vents on the deck? I mean on one hand, those vents seem the most susceptible to mines and plunging fire – but if covered isn’t the tank likely to over heat etc.

Am I missing something with this concept? Can someone clear the concept up for me?

Thanks,
Noah

If the grills are blocked entirely, the tank will overheat.

Noah your right.
They just didn't go so far as to cover the intake but did use them on the deck. I beleive they did this mainly Iwo Jima and some on Okinawa. I'd have to dig through the photos to be exact.
Are you looking for anything specific or just in general?
Bob
