I am preparing to build some modern AFV stuff, mostly OIF era, Challenger, Warrior, M1's, M2's, LTVP-5 and so on. These will be built over a period of time, so no rush. Anyway,as the title says, I'm looking for info on non-skid surfaces on these vehicles. I don't expect info on every modern IFV, but maybe someone could supply a source that I could use to look up the info as I build the particular vehicle. I've seen some interesting techniques on-line and would like to include them on future builds.
Thanks,
Mike

Here is the Abrams diagram from a post yesterday.
M1 Abrams Anti-slip diagram
As a note, the LVTP-5 is not really modern and was not used in OIF. Also, it did not have any anti-slip added. I think you mean the AAVP7A1, which was used in OIF.

Thanks for the info, and your correct about the LTPV-5, I've got that project on a back burner too. Just not enough hours in a day.

Gino... I remember you mentioned Rustoleum in the other thread. Is that any Rustoleum spray paint.. or Rustoleum car primer? I looked for it on the Amazon site and found a few items but I don't know which one you use.
Also, does it naturally have a rough finish or do you have to use it in a certain way to get that rough finish?
Thank you
Hisham

It is a special type of Rust-Oleum American Accents texture paint. They have a few different ones in different colors and textures here in the states. I use the Terra Cotta one. It gives a sandy texture and is in a terra cotta red color like flower pots.
It looks like this:

Is it like this one where it says "Textured" on the can... or is it a specific color that has the sandy finish?
Sorry for all the questions, but we don't get any of this stuff here in Egypt.

OOps! I guess we posted at the same time!!

Got it!

Is this the usual price it goes for?
Thanks again

Final question... I promise
I know spray cans can't be shipped by air-mail. But do you know it it is prohibited for anyone to be carrying a spray can with him on a plane now?
I ask beacuse before 9/11 and all the regulations that ensued.. Internet Hobbies used to ship spray cans to me by UPS.
Thank you
Hisham

WOW!!! $12 for only 12 ounces. It only sells for about $6 for a big 15 oz can here in the states.
I am pretty sure they can not be taken on a plane, at least not in carry-on lugage. You are allowed aerosols like shave cream, hairspray, etc. in checked baggage. You might be able to do that.

My brother-in-law is coming to Egypt for a visit next month and I thought I could order it and have it shipped to him.
Is this Terra Cotta easy to find at K-mart for instance? If so, I can tell him to get it from there if it's that much cheaper.

Any home improvement store or well-stocked hardware stores; like Lowes, Home Depot, etc., should carry it. I think I got it at Home Depot myself. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info, this is the technique I will be trying. The M1 diagram was most helpful, now does anyone know where these might be obtained for other modern AFV's?
Thanks,
Mike

please have your B-i-L check with his airline, for their baggage regulations,
as any flights in or out of the UK will ONLY allow up to 100 ML (milli-litres) liquids or sprays
in personal carry-on luggage.
There are other/similar (same stuff in another branded tin?) sprays available, eg,
Crylon is a brand available in the UK,
or look for someone willing to ship surface,
Mr Hobby Surfacer500 is not a spray, so could be shipped airmail?

Does Mr Hobby Surface 500 give the same rough, "sandy", finish like Rust-oleum?
It's easy for me to get it from HLJ
Thanks

apols for delay, I've been on holiday.
The Mr Surfacer range is available as spray cans, as well as jars for brush or spray use.

Don't even think about trying to get aerosol paint on a plane....it's a hazardous material and will get you held up in security for quite some time if you try. You can't even send it as airfreight. these days.
You can texture ordinary paint by adding finely ground chalk powder which might be an option worth pursuing
