M1 Abrams - "Bill the Cat", is there any 1/35 decals for this tank? or can anybody provide a scan of the instructions & decals from the 1/72 or 1/35 ESCI/ERTL kit?
thanks

Verlinden used to do a set, I think they were dry transfers. Not too sure about availability any more. Would be nice to see some early M1, M1IP decals.

I believe the original Tamiya boxing of the M1 had "Bill the Cat" decals too. I haven't seen any AM ones though.

Afraid not - I have that in my plastic dungeon and it's Yukon Jack and Thunderbolt only. Pity, as I was all ready to offer them ...

Oh well, guess the old memory is getting rattled a bit.
Good luck anyways.

There's a B&W close-up of "Bill the Cat" character in the old Squadron "M1 Abrams in action" book. According to the caption, it was carried by all the Abrams assigned to the 1st Platoon 8th Cavalry during the Canadian Army Trophy competition in June 1987. There's a side view drawing of one of them and another one is featured on the book cover...

Verlinden had Bill the Cat and Garfield riding a sabot round with the words Laze and Blaze underneath. It was sheet #508. I'd offer them, but I've already given them to someone else.
The original Esci M1 included the same Garfield markings, I will check the stash to see if it included Bill the Cat as well.

I have the Verlinden sheet somewhere in my stash. It is very old and I am not sure dry transfers deteriorate over time. You can have them, as long as you actually use them. As noted, the Squadron book is your best bet for reference on the tanks that had this.
Let me know.

Since we are talking about Tamiya's orginal M1-I know a guy that has this kit in shrinkwrap and was wondering if it has any value due to it's rarity and being still shrinkwrapped. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Dan

Its not really that valuable. I have seen them on eBay for around $30. Old models don't bring that much as collectors items. Personally, I don't see the point of hanging onto them as collectors items. Old models are not going to make you rich. In my eyes, they were made to be built, not collected in their boxes.

Some pics ( from www.3ad.com and www.3ad.org ) :
A few more here : http://www.tankmastergunner.com/images/military/cat87/index.htm
A video of CAT 1987 at Grafenwoehr (too bad it really shows its age )

Phil,
The Academy M1A1 kit did include a "Bill the Cat" decal. I almost finished mine, but gave up when i saw what needed to be done to actually make it an M1A1 (there are a TON of problems.). Anyway, I'll look around and see if I still have them. If I've got them, they are yours (I'll PM you to let you know).
Now, how many of you would want to be a part of coming up with a decal sheet of early M1's, M1 IP's and perhaps early M1A1's? I don't primarily build modern stuff, but if there is enough info and interest, I'd be happy to produce a sheet. My company Decalocmaniacs! makes decals for small armies and subjects that are too small (or obscure) for a major manufacturer to tackle. Send me a PMif you are interested.
Regards,
Georg Eyerman

Hi Bob,
Yes I fully intend to use them as I have been inspired by this subject for some time now since obtaining the Squadron Signal book on the Abrams.
I am using the DML M1 Panther II hull and tracking down a suitable turret, T-156 Tracks.
I have two Abrams projects in the mill, USMC - "War Pig" & "Bill the Cat"

One of the vendors at AMPS had a couple for $20 each that I was eyeing up, but I keep hoping that Dragon is going to come out with a plain M1 or M1 IP...once they run out of Pz IV variants

Hello Frenchy,
Yes this helps a lot, would you know if the Turret has two or three blow out panels?, I assume it is the 105mm gun. This is so I can source the correct turret.
thanks

The Abrams that won CAT 1987 were IP M1s with 105mm gun and the bustle rack. The turret has 3 blowout panels.

The original Tamiya M1 turret is best. It already comes w/the three-piece blow off panels too. All you would have to add is the turret basket. The rest of the kit is great too. The old Esct/AMT M1 kits are pretty rough.

Hi Georg,
I have been researching the markings of this CAT 87 unit (1st platoon, D Company, 4/8 Cavalry, 3rd Armored Div) for a while now, and i actually made contact with the driver of D14, the overall high scoring tank, who provided me with a wealth of information. I'm actually preparing the art now, so this thread is pretty fortuitous. If you'd like, i can send you what info i have. Let me know what format and quality the art needs to be. You can reach me @ lock316(at)yahoo(dot)com.
Regarding the conversion, i've been working on that one also for a few months. You'll need two Tamiya kits unfortunately. The Tamiya M1 kits have two turrets, the original "short" turret that appears in the initial M1 kit and revised in the M1A1 kits, and the current "long" turret that reflects the additional armor added to the IPM1/M1A1 and on. You'll need an original M1 kit for the hull, the track retainer rings, and the 105mm gun since there's no aftermarket that i know of that properly reflects the thermal shroud setup of the M1. You'll then need an M1A2 kit for the correct "long" turret and bustle rack. My research shows that 4/8 Cav was equipped with early/mid production IPM1s at the time of CAT 87. This means that they had the long turret, but did not have the proper "integrated" side rails. They had the original type that bent into the turret side, and had the bustle rack added afterward. They also had the 3 blowout panels in the roof, so you'll have to heavily alter the tamiya turret. They are also pre nonskid, so the dragon turrets are out.
I'll try to post some pics of my work so far in the coming days.

One of the M1(A1)'s at CAT 89 had a Chester Cheetah on it that would make a nice decal. I've got a picture od it laying around. Not sure what unit.

All true, but it is important to note that M1 IP with enlarged turrets had different 105mm gun mantlets than earlier small turret tanks. These mantlets were in fact closer in shape to later M1A1 120mm gun mantlets, except of course for a smaller gun barrel opening. So it would probably be the best idea to use later type mantlet from M1A1 kit and modify it for thinner 105mm barrel.

Sabot,
I think that was me you gave those to a couple years ago, and yes, they do come apart with age! They completely vaporized when I tried to use them. I still have a half built scratch built IPM1 waiting for a good Bill the Cat set.
