Hy all!
Does anyone know if this (Dragon number 9010) is a good kit and if I can build a US Sherman 1945 in Germany.
Maybe any pics of this version.
Thanks!

Hi,

If you need some Sherman references, I collected some here - Sherman Tank.

Yes, it is a great late war Sherman tank.

Hey Daleil ..... simply yes on both parts of your question. It is a very decent kit to work with and can be used for late W.W.II.

Some great references there Jose. :-)

I agree -- this is a nice kit.

Of course, it can stand a few "tweaks" to make it even nicer. Jordi Rubio makes a real nice barrel for this kit, replacing the kit barrel that is noticably short. Also, I hope you have the later-issue kit -- early issues of this kit have an upside-down gun mantlet (I have one of each).

One last tip: be careful with the suspension. It is relatively fragile and the connection points to the hull are pretty wimpy. You may want to reinforce them with pins or stiff wire.

Have fun!

Here's a related question: How different is the kit Daleil is asking about (9010) to the DML M4A3E8 kit (9009)? I'm assuming that they are the same kit with different decals. My kit (9009) has only Korean war era decals. Does 9010 have WWII decals?

I've got a few of them at home and can give you a better rundown tonight. But off the top of my head, the tracks are different (single pin vs double pin), the WW2 variant comes with add on armor plating for the front of the hull. I do not believe that the Rice's Red Devil M4A3E8 comes with WW2 markings, but I will have to confirm this. I think the main gun may be different as well (muzzle brake). I built the 9009X (resin hulled kit) about 5 years ago (my first DML Sherman) and have not done the 9010 (mine is a later reissue 6083).

Each of these two kits has been issued in 3 variations, the 9009 and 9010 contain the Italeri running gear (goes to the parts box) and lower hull. The 9009X and 9010X add a resin hull so there is no cutting of the VVSS mounts off the old Italeri hull to mount the HVSS bogies. The latest issues have a corrected plastic hull. I've got the WW2 variant (6083) and the Korean War variant (don't recall the reissue number--6082?) with the corrected plastic hulls unbuilt at home.

Both kits are highly recommended. The resin hulled ones are more of a collector's item now.

Rob -- Thanks. I have 9009X and I can confirm that it only contains Korean War markings. It looks to be a great kit. I plan to make mine into a late WWII vehicle though as I am much more interested in WWII Shermans.

Hy!
After reading this Dragon-Tohuwabohu I don't know which Eduard-PE parts to use.
First I wanted to use the one for the Dragon M4A3E8, but can I build then a superior ww2 sherman?

Yes, you can use the Eduard set.

Rob and Adam: I don't currently have a kit of the WWII version to compare with, but I believe the biggest differences between the two kits are the decals and the tracks. (I think you guys have pretty much covered the early issue hull problems and subsequent "fixes" in various reissues ... )

You guys have pretty well covered the bases; I'll toss a few more things into the fray. The DML suspension IS really fragile; the Academy one from their M51 is stouter. I've done a couple of Dragon's HVSS and I'm trying to stay away from it in the future. Their upper hull is OK, but I like the contours on Tamiya's better. My own preference for a late WW2 version?
Tamiya M4A3 hull, Academy HVSS suspension, Tank Workshop turret, Accurate Armour T66 resin tracks. The TW turret comes with a 76mm aluminum barrel with the thread cap; look for Rubio or other if you want the muzzle brake. HTH,

Greg -- If you decide to make another late WW2 Sherman in the future might I suggest trying the Chesapeake Model Designs turret(s). They are worlds better than the TW ones and they don't cost much more either. They do 3 different versions of the T23 turret, a Firefly turret, and a couple 75mm turrets.

A different angle - I'm making an M4A1 76(w) HVSS by backdating the Academy M51 with Tamiya engine deck & rear plate, Italeri T23 turret and M1A1C gun with muzzle brake from a Hellcat. Some project - gotta picture of the real thing but not in service. Can anyone help out with some marking info? also no info on any of the links on British use of this tank - was there a Sherman 11AY?

OK guys, here's the real deal between the two tank kits:
1. Decals: Each kit comes with only one set of decals
2. Tracks: Korean War kit (9009) comes with 4 "E" sprue that make the double pin tracks.
WW2 kit (9010) comes with 3 "G" sprue that makes the all-metal track.
3. WW2 kit comes with an "F" sprue that includes full side skirts, front glacias armor piece, transmission cover armor piece, right & left turret armor pieces, front and rear fenders.

Rest of the kit is identical, obviously the WW2 variant doesn't use the Korean War front and rear fenders included on the "C" sprue.

Yow, the infamous "M4A1E8" ... I did nearly the same thing with the Dragon Korea M4A3 (76)W HVSS kit, an Italeri M4A1 upper hull and a Rubio barrel.

You probably won't find any of these in action, even though there are LOADS of photos of this beast in books and on the web -- trouble is, they are almost all photos of restored vehicles in private collections. Apparently, it never saw service in WWII or Korea. It was used for stateside training and later issued to National Guard units. Some made their way into post-war French and Italian forces, then subsequently to Israel, Uganda and other countries. Maybe some served post-war with Britain, but I kind of doubt it.

More info can be found on Hanno Sploestra's Sherman Register page: http://web.inter.nl.net/users/spoelstra/g104/index.htm When I get around to finishing mine (I shelved it in disgust), I'll probably do it as a Ugandan Sherm.

I remember we had one in front of our company area when I was stationed at Sullivan Barracks in Mannheim, Germany. It was painted in the MERDC camouflage scheme. I will have to look through old negatives to see where the couple of shots I have of it are. I doubt they would be of any use to you though. I remember it was my very first kit-bash. I used the old Tamiya M4A3E8 suspension mated to the Italeri hull. Used the old Verlinden Sherman Superdetail set (my first use of PE) and even used strip styrene for the fenders. I wonder where that kit is now? Must be in one of my old kit boxes. It hasn't seen the light of day since December 1990.
