Hi all, Ive been dreaming up a small diorama for my academy M3a1stuart. now I fancied doing something about Guadacanal I have a reference pictorial book about that campaign one photo has a close up of two tankers in front of their stuart and I noticed it had the sponson .30;s in place I checked other photo's and they all showed the Mg's in place.I am confused as I have followed a couple of builds on this site and it was stated that the Marines removed the mg's and blanked off the openings.I noticed that the Marines equipment during the battle was "dated" ie thompsons with drum magazines.bit long winded i guess but did the Marines have the M3a1 or just the M3 during the battles just answered my own question the photo iwas refering to was an M2a4 that will teach me to check further in future

Hi John,
You must refering to Page 16 of the Stuart, U.S. Light tanks in Action book put out by Squadron/Signal Publications, Armor No. 18 book.
If you have this book and flip over to page 18 you'll find some other Stuart without the sponson .30 cal's and the front fenders completely removed.
The reason why the .30's were removed was for more stores. Plus the sponson .30's were useless on the battlefield. The fender were removed from the M3's because the Japanese threw heavy logs and metal into the works and jamming the running gears.
This pratice of removing the .30's varied from unit to unit.
The M2A4's only combat use was in Guadalcanal. Same thing with the .30's in the M2A4's, some were left in, some were removed.

While the Army deemed the sponson machine guns useless, the Marines rather liked them, at least initially. The reason they finally had to go was that the spent .30 shell casings would accumulate on the floor and could jam the controls.
