I bought the Dragon Eastern Front Tank Hunters kit which includes a Hitleryouth member but I never painted a black uniform, only normal field grey, khaki or camouflage. What should I use for drybrushing etc.? Maybe somebody could post pictures of his figures in black uniforms, I'd be very thankful for your support.

Someone gave me the tip once, to use pink in the basic black, pure black for shadows and more pink for highlights.
This gives the pink a nice deep and warm colour, with enough possibilities to vary in tones without it turning grey.
I did use it myself on a 90mm SAS Nimrod-figure and was quite pleased with the result. I also tried this with blue on a 120mm panzerfigure, but that was much less evident.
Good luck!

Rarely is black completely black in clothing. It's usually very dark grey/ blue/ brown, whichever is more applicable.
Just judging the cover, I'd say you would be good with a very dark brown as a base color, with pure black as shading color and a somewhat less very dark brown as a highlight color (mix with light grey in that case )

Actually, the Hitlerjugend winter uniform was dark blue, not black, but in some photos, it might appear to be black. You could try mixing your paints to get some dark blue color, and then use more black for shadows , and more blue for highlights.

My tip is somewhat more like Ronīs. But instead of pink, use flesh (maybe not a pile of difference?). This gives a warm colour ... looking somewhat brown before going grey ... when more is added. A friend give me this tip years ago, and I have used it several times since, with very nice results. Iīll post some images this evening.

I once received two copies (only ordered one) of, "How to Paint realistic military figures" by Lynn Kessler and Don Winar. It's a Fine Scale Modeler publication; a little dated, but the 2nd edition has been updated with the new techniques in acrylics explained. There's a section on painting black uniforms, and it's very good. I found it a useful book overall, especially explanations about using the colour wheel and how to apply this to highlights and shadows. I'd like to explain more, but there might be some copyright issues involved. I could send you my spare copy if you are interested. Just drop me a line.

Hi
I would like to purchase the book that's been mentioned by Lynn Kessler and I'm sure I can source it for the correct price in the UK. Currently a Google search has come up with some quite frankly ridiculous price for this. I have found a couple at published price but am awaiting a reply as to stock availability and as I'm currently without work (damned recession !!) I'll have to wait anyway
What my Google search did bring up is a review and some sample pages of the book which coincidently by luck shows the sample pages containing the "how to on Black uniforms" section. It looks a good book and I'm sure I'll get it one day.
Sample pages.
