Sorry to write in such a negative tone, however I have now finished my WW1 diorama using 10 completed dioramas that can be joined togetrher to form one huge diorama showing 'my' view of World War One, due to what only can be described as a serious lack of intrest, the only reason I am actually posting this message is to say - its now finished and while I have never seen any attempt by anyone building such a project I can only blame myself by my constant posting, so sorry about that people -

Luke - I'm on nights at the moment, so leave it with me for a couple days, and I'll post on a new thread, I honestly didn't want to do this as I've already taken up loads of space and as I said a few times before, no one is really bothered, I am 51 years old, but I am a beginner as well, so my model skills are not all that, and I feel this is more the reason why people have been put off, plus also there's no gallery on this site, only these threads, ans as you know, the more threads the more get knocked off the bottom, so, leave it with me.

Al,
Don't get disheartened. I really don't think it's a matter of people not being bothered.
It's quite common to get massive numbers of hits in a thread but only a few replies. Even the very best modellers here often get a relatively few replies to photos of their work - but loads of hits on their posts. A ratio of 10, 20 or even 50 hits to 1 comment is by no means uncommon.
It's the nature of forums. Fact is, a lot of people just like to peruse the threads and move on without commenting. I do it myself. I think we all do it. Sometimes I'll comment, but often I won't. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I'm not bothered, not interested or not impressed by what I see.
And sometimes, someone else will have already "said it for me". Sometimes I'm just too lazy.
Do post up your work (I think I recall seeing part of it some weeks ago). Yes it's always nice to get comments, constructive feedback / criticism and especially compliments. But it's not the be-all and end-all. The main thing is as long as YOU'RE having fun with your hobby. Build for yourself first and foremost. That's the main thing.
And as for your skills, well, you describe yourself as a "beginner" , but so were we all at some stage. Don't feel inferior or unworthy. You're among friends here.

Alec,
I've already tried to explain you some of my thoughts about your dio project. But you hadn't care. You even SAID you didn't care.
So I keep following with interest your work, but without saying things you know already.
Stop complaining, you don't make diorama for armorama users, but for you don't you?
Also, I havn't seen lot of "good or bad comments" as you could say, from you in other people's threads.
Maybe involvment doesn't work in one way.
Alexandre.

Hey Alec,
Just so you are aware, there is a gallery on this site...If you click on the Photos tab next to the Forums tab it will take you to it. Log in with the same user name and password as on Armorama and then upload. You might need to register but I dont think so if you belong to Armorama....been along time since I did it.
As for you diorama, I think it is great that you as a beginer have taken on such a challange as you have with a larg diorama. As others have said its not that we dont care but some of us can be just plain lazy and not want to move our fingers more than it takes to click the mouse button........I myself have posted on her before and had one or no replies. Doesnt mean no one cares or is not interested, just they dont have anything to say at the moment.
So just remember your diorama is for you, if you like it and have fun building it then that is the best thing you can do. Im not saying dont show your work cause its for you but if no one replies in the end you are still happy.
This forum is to get help with questions and for people to give you advise, once that is done it is up to you to take it and change the project in the way the advise stated or to be happy with it and try the advise on the next project. We all start not knowing how to do anything....It is here were we can only get better and learn new ways to build and become better at our hobby.

WOW what can I say ? I was wrong, very wrong and thank you guys for putting me straight on these matters, yes I do enjoy building these dioramas, much better than my usual 1-350 warships, a BIG thank you to everyone for so much help advise and pointing me in the right direction.

To be honest, I didn't even see those threads until now. How can you stand to paint those tiny figures!? I definitely want to see all the segments together. I especially like those tanks though. They look really nice just covered with all that mud.

Richard Singleton, thank you for those kind words, and the completed subject has been snapped and on display, I always find the easy way to do things, the irony there is that it takes time finding the easy solution in the first place, I normally find the dominate colour and paint every figure the same, then once dry, paint weapons (all) and so on, before you know where you are, you've got loads of figures done.

Hey Alec,
I am actually starting a WWI airfield. It is not that big, but probably 20 " by 30 ". I do have some questions, and it is taking me a while to get started.
My main question is whether or not to prime my wood base with an acrylic primer. I guess it is a silly question as just sitting here I can hear the answer: yes. so I will get to that and post some pics later.
btw I saw the WWI scene that is in segments. That is my idea also, just working on the first segment, which will focus on the aerodrome/

Hello Billy, the above is my German Albatros D-111, however it could quite easily be a Camel or Bristol you name it, its the airfield being the reason why I posted it for you, back in the days of World War One there was no real air-strip, a few scattered buildings and a ton of grass (without to many hills) with most grass, once you've stuck that down, you'll still have to paint slightly as no grass is pure green. The wooden sheet you are using, wow that is big 20x30 inches, I would plan everything (close enough to) on paper then roughly transferr this onto the board, this will give you an idea where everything will go, if you want a hard concrete run way, simply paint it, if you're going for a grass field, then you can just make out in my photo you have high grass, and where people and aircraft run, worn out grass, I never bothered painting the base of the little diorama, just glued on the grass, some over slight bumps and it looked and felt fine, biggest problem I now face, is dust which is a shame. Good luck, and please by all means keep me posted on your WW1 airfield.

Hi Alec (or do you go by Al?)
Thanks for the picture. It is awesome and gives me a lot of hope for my project.
Eventually I want to do a hybrid 1/72/HO scale WWI railroad which would include the airfield, which is why I am working in segments. Really my base isn't that big. You didn't think that I meant feet did you? I am having trouble with the size of the hangers. Were there hangers in WWI? I did realize the part about the aerodrome mostly being grass fields, no concrete, and some building, but part of it is going to be the RR depot, and I hope to depict replacement aircraft, etc. being unloaded.
As far as the size of the hangers go, should I try to fit 4 aircraft per hanger? The scale is 1/72 btw.
thanks! I have been busy on many projects, but now that I see people active here I am going to make a point to check in and comment, etc.
Love the work so far!

Hello Billy - sorry to write with bad news, on the subject of hangers, I honestly don't have a clue, and as daft as this might seem, if I 'were' building one from scratch, I'd messure the width of an aircraft (1-72 SopwithCamel will do) add a couple of inches, and perhaps that would do for the doors, once you have some idea of scale, and its only a guess, you can build from the doors, obviously the roof has to be higher, the building wider and so on, while using the 1-72 aircraft as a scale marker, sorry I can't be of any good help.

Billy i will try and find my big ww1 book, from what i know, there were very few areodromes in and around 1915 in france and belgium, back then industrial in france and belgium wasnt what we would now call industrial, it would be possible to build a farmhouse and barn, and have a 'plane in the barn undergoing repairs, the other planes would have been pushed under trees as stated, another form of areodrome was one situated on the border of a forest, the planes were puched under the tree canopy, and sometimes netting was placed on them, the crew lived in tents, ( sometiems teepee style) , i think a farm and barn woundnt look out of place by a rialroad, but i will search for some areodrome pictures
ohh, some planes were kept in large tents
axis tents
heres a layout of a "real" areodroms
ballarar
1934 but you could make some like this if you really wanted to

Hey Al,
These are very nice! Had not seen these before as I rarely visit this forum (not much into dio building). I do like WWI subjects very much, however, and, to be quite honest, looking at all the work you put into your dio provided enough inspiration to get something WWI on the bench.
Nice job!
Rob

hi james,
Those are cool pictures. I like the 1934 picture the best, cause it does give an idea of what a hanger would look like. I have a couple 1/72 models that I am 'toying' with to help with scale. I love the 1/72 scale and hope to increase my collection in this size, so that I can use them in this dio. It is hard to find good WWI stuff, so the interwar period might be interesting as well.
I will post some pictures of my layout soon! Thanks for all the help so far, and that would be cool, Rob, if you had a WWI idea also. Maybe we could have a campaign.

Hello Billy, this is my whole diorama, each segment messures 6 inches by 12 inches and there are 10 of them, however, each of the segments is also a completed diorama in its own right.
The above is segment 8 (I think, its being broken up due to lack of space) but I hope this gives you some idea, I'm quite lousy at building dioramas then again I honestly enjoy it, so its not all bad news, I wish you happy modeling, and please keep us up to date on your build.

yeah, that is posted on another thead right? I saw it before and was really impressed. I like the action, there is a lot going on to give it a sort of compressed feel.
My plan is a HO scale railroad, so the airfield will just be part of it, but now I am rethinking my scale. It would be cool to focus on the rail depot, and not so much the open field. I guess when I post a picture it will make more sense, but I am sort of still wavering on the size and scope.
Any ideas for WWI, or interwar HO conversion kits?
nice work once again on that segmented dio. that really is a piece of work.
