Hello

Can anyone please tell me, do you need to thin Vallejos Air matt varnish ?
If so what do you use and what is the mixing ratio ? I have heard conflicting reports. Some say, the vallejo air does not need thinning. Others say it does. I have read that some people say to use rubbing alcohol and others distilled water ?
Advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Paul.

Bump.

I have just started using Vallejo products, and have been pleased for the most part; so I figured I'd give the varnish a try. I airbrushed the Model Color Matte Varnish, thinned with a little distilled water. The problem was that I got a little bit of a white sheen, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. What is the consensus on using this stuff?

You don't need to dilute Air valleyo paints, they are ready for the airbrush. (not for the brush)

If you want a paint more thinned you can add WATER. If you want to avoid a huge mess, don't use the rubber alcohol! Valleyo paints are vinilic paints, so you can't dilute them with alcohol

cheers

No matter if you buy the Matt, Gloss, or Semi-Gloss Varnish in either the Air Color bottle (which are actually being discontinued) or the Model Color bottle, it is actually the same product, same consistency, same viscosity. This comes direct from Alex Vallejo himself...one of the owners of Vallejo, as I asked the question to him what the difference was between them, and expressed my concern over the discontinuation of the varnishes from the Air Color line.

As far as using the rest of the Air Color line, while they are already pre-thinned for airbrushing, they can be brush painted as well. If you want to thin them out a little more, a couple of drops of Vallejo Thinner works very well. Alternatively you can used distilled water, but their thinner has some retarder properties to it, so it keeps the paint from drying out in your airbrush, or before it hits your model.

Scott, thanks for that. I had wondered (even suspected) that there might not be much difference between the model color and air varnishes. Still wondering, however, how to avoid the slight whiteness when I use the Matt. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it caused by improper thinning?

Hi

I use it out of the bottle without any thinners and get a nice dead flat finish.

Using Vallejo's white thinner will improve both the flow and the adhesion of the Vallejo Air products so if you feel it is better to thin the varnis, I suggest you use this thinner and not water.

The same thinner that is used for the paints? It's ok to use it with the varnish too?
