A question for the sites Aussie friends. I could not get a good match mixing Tamiya paints on my first kick at the can with the Trumpeter ASLAV-25. This time around I intend to use Valejo Model Color 70819 Iraqui Sand, Valejo Model Color 70862 Black Grey and Valejo Model Air 71044 Light Grey Green. Are these accurate representations of the real paint? Are the Trumpeter instructions correct in stating the darkest color is a black/green or is it near NATO black? Any help is appreciated. Cheers, Jeff.

Jeffery
Have you seen this long thread about building ASLAV's?
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/120708&page=12
I linked you to page 12 but go back and forth to see the thinking behind the colours. Some colour charts on pages 5 and 6 as well.
A number of us have different thoughts on the colours but the conversation about mixing the right colour can be found there.
Let us know what you decide on.
Regards
Bill

Bill, thank you for your response. Yes, I have read the ASLAV thread a couple of times and found it very helpful but extremely involved for my limited knowledge of Australian military equipment. I was hoping to save time by finding close matches of the paint and avoid a mixing nightmare.I guess the problem with replicating scale model paint to the real thing is individual interpretation and artistic linence. I'm interested to hear from anyone who has used these Valejo paints to see how they feel about the colors and airbrush qualities. And yes Bill, I will let you know what I decided on for paint when I have airbrush to model. Cheers, Jeff.

As far as I'm aware, the only direct match for Aussie Lustreless Olive Drab (the lighter green colour on most modern Aussie vehicles) is White Ensign Models AR OZ 01. (enamel)
One can get close using Tamiya XF-73 Dark Green (JGSDF) or XF-58 Olive Green lightened with XF-60 Dark Yellow.

Phil,
We no longer use OD Lustreless and have not used it on amour since we went with the tri cam.
The closest match I have for the green is Model Master Forest green with a 5-10% mix of Model Master Tan.
Cheers Jason

I have a selection of Valejo paints and I really like the way they spray in my airbrush. As you have already read in the ASLAV thread, I did have an issue with Valejo primer. The reason I went with Tamiya paints for my PC was because I had a greater selection of appropriate colours in Tamiya than with Valejo.
Look forward to your progress.

Thanks again for the response Bill. I just received the Mouse House MA-125 ASLAV conversion in the mail today and I have decided to use Valejo for the project. Also received Military Briefs #4-ASLAV with my package which is an uber reference book and saw your Phase 2 ASLAV-PC photos in the book. It is exceptional work, congrats Bill. Cheers, Jeff.

The Military Briefs #4-ASLAV is my book of choice these days. When ever I get a chance I read a bit more and dream of all the possibilities. Has anyone done a full blown review of this book yet, I know it has been mentioned but it deserves a real review.
Thanks for mentioning my PC in the back, I am honored that it is there and it is in some pretty good company as well.
I look forward to your continued Australian projects.

Magnificent build on that LAV, might I ask if you used acrylics or oil based paints?

Not a problem Bill. It is well deserved. I just didn't get mine painted in time. Just on one note, the 1/35th ASLAV 25 with Bar in the back of the book, is the same model as the one above. Witch in turn was the one used for the instructions for MA125.
Charles,
Thanks for the nice comments. I use enamel paints and artist oils.
Cheers Jason

So the MA125 conversion is the set to convert the Trumpeter LAV 25 by into a ASLAV 25 correct. MA125 Bravo is the set underway to correct the Trumpeter ASLAV 25 right?
I look forward to seeing how comprehensive you've decided to make the MA125 Bravo, should be a real treat.
Best to you
Bill

Yes and no mate. The MA125 "Bravo" will be to convert the Trump ASLAV into a Bar Armour version. Basiclly the same conversion but with a couple of parts missing.
MA132 will be the correction for the Trump ASLAV kit into Phase III Aust/Afghan.
Cheers Jason

Jason, I purchased the Mouse House MA-125 conversion after viewing photos of your build, it is an excellent build and paint job. I thought I could build an Afghanistan ASLAV with MA-125, what are the differences between it and MA- 132? Cheers, Jeff.

G'day Jeff, Thanks for the comments mate.
You can use MA125 for an RTF/MRTF ASLAV. Just don't add the Bar armour. But there are also a couple of ASLAV-25's in Afghanistan with Bar Armour. But only a few are sporting it. As usual, check any reference you have, including Austalian Defence Force web site
MA132 will be a update/correction for the Trump ASLAV. There will be no Bar Armour in this kit. But will have a couple of extra resin parts that MA125 does not have.
Cheers Jason

the official colours are:
a. Camouflage Green - Olive Drab Lustreless. Reference 7650/ADE(M) 146-1/1, November 1967;
b. Camouflage Brown - US Federal Standard 595a 30219;
c. Black - US Federal Standard 595a 37038
I am told that the green is very close to FS34082. You should be able to find these in Testors.

hey jase! i have a few tins of paint i have ''obtained'' from as early as ww2 till now and i would have to say that when protec started making the paint it has become more olive. i do know that the ''new'' paints have infra red capabilitys.
but at the end of the day you can see the difference in 1-1 scale when you look at older paint jobs. i used to see really
washed-out cam on landy's in darwin. but now the paint seems to hold its colour.
but it seems a tad to blue to me.i use testers olive number 1165 it is a shade lighter than WEM's lustreless od but in scale it all pan's out.
cheers
