I guess if you wanted real wood, you could make them out of balsa. But, I'm sure several companies make pre-made accessories.

I use a very simple method to create ammo crates and the like... Plastruct and Evergreen both make a sheet of "plank board" in a variety of sizes. I cut these sheets out with an Xacto blade and steel ruler (must have perfect straight edges!), and then add cross-braces of wood all around with thin strips of real wood. The plastruct sheets glue well together with ordinary bottle glue, and I add the wood with white Elmers Glue.
Once everthing is "square, tight, and dry", I paint the boxes with varying shades of grayish browns, and dry-brush with a lighter shade on the cross-braces. Looks quite nice, and VERY easy to do!
If this is your first attempt, you might want to use modeling clay to support the insides of the structure while you fit the pieces together. To make "nail sink marks" just use the tip of a heated needle or pin. Add a few scratches too, to indicate scarring from movement and being tossed around a bit.
Would this be a good subject for my next Digital Diamonds article?

Consider it done. I just completed the article with illustrations, and will email it to Jim tonight to post at his convenience. Look for Digital Diamonds #9 - "Create-a-Crate" soon!

It's not a question of "how good we are in comparison to one another"... it's "How much fun are we having!".... that is always my motto...
There are only three things I REALLY enjoy 100% in life...
- Scuba Diving
- American Football (Go Cowboys!)
- Modeling Dioramas
... well, ok, actually there IS a fourth, but my wife may not like me to discuss it in a public forum
