Does anybody know how to use this process to emulate birds' chipping of paint?

I've just tried this technique with amazing results on the interior of the canopy of a bf109e-7 trop ... I must recommend this to all of those who seek good chipping +WEATHERING. Yes, the salt appears to absorb some of the pigments or mix some of its sodium with the paint so that the final work looks weathered and lighter than the original color. I dont have a camera but, believe me .. it is worth trying this.

The thing I like about this method is that it is using stuff you have on hand.
You also get a randomness to it that you have a hard time achieving with a liquid mask method.

Hi CSCH

You dab the salt onto the model with a wet paintbrush or tooth-pick until it's in the patterns you want... it's a bit fiddly, but it works. Then you let the water dry and this leaves the salt in place (handle it carefully though). Then spray the top colour. After that's dry, brush off the salt to reveal the bare "metal".

All the best

This is how I do it
1) paint with testor's silver only on the places where there is going to be chipping (applied after the primer has been applied)
2) wet the whole surface
3) apply salt mainly in the zones that you want the desired effect trying to avoid large accumulations of salt (what I call "Salt Mountains")
4) When it is dry ... wet a paintbrush with water and with it wet the salt ... at the same time remove the salt from places that you dont want it to be
5) Let it dry and paint with airbrush
6) Remove salt and Ready

Hi everyone

We all forgot the last and most important stage:

Apologise for not putting the salt back in the kitchen...!

All the best

I found it to be easy to just put a drop of water where you want the chip to be, sprinkle a little salt on the model and set it aside to dry. Once dry, shoot your color of choice and again set aside to dry. When the paint is dry, just brush the salt away with a stiff brush. Works great.
