Starting my AMPS stash build of the ZSU
Posted: Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 01:10 PM UTC
Starting my 10 year stash build of the DML ZSU, I am pretty sure I have had it for 10 years. Does anyone have any comments on the kit. I know I would like to replace the tracks. IS there a set of Fruil that would be correct for this kit? Any chance of finding the Trakz interior set? IS the PE worth buying? This will be my first post 45 kit in at least 5 years.

tracks in the kit are ok, the Trackz interior is fun enough if you want to go that route, PE is a must, and the overall look of the kit is pretty nice even OOB.

Scott,
If you can find it get a hold of the modelkasten track set which includes very nice roadwheels and drive sprockets as well, the kit sprockets are pretty bad and need every tooth reshaped if you want them to fit the tracks. Barring that , masterclub does tracks and roadwheels in resin and although I haven't seen them in the flesh ( or resin as it were; ) ) I wouldn't hesitate to get them as the masterclub stuff I do have is beautiful. The eduard photoetch looks useful but make sure you get the newer set, the old one doesn't have much going for it. Are you building this for next years show? If so they'll be at least 2 there!
Lots of good online refs. out there so get started and have fun!

I'm sorry to say that the Trakz interior is almost impossible to find - I tried (for 2 years!) to get it on backorder from Trakz/VLS/whoever they are now, with no success. I eventually found one on Ebay, so keep an eye out, but don't hold your breath!
The Eduard set (35477) is very nice and comprehensive.
I am also looking for suitable track replacements, since this will be (hopefully) be my "magnum opus"!

Thanks for all the info. I am definitely getting the PE and MK tracks. Does anyone know where I can get some new barrels at for it?

Hey there Scott,
I built this kit a few years back. I used the Eduard PE set and the MK tracks. The tracks were sweet, clickable type, with a metal drive sprocket. Mind you although the tracks are clickable, you might have some that just don't hold enough. I put a drop of tamiya glue in the ones that wouldn't hold right, besides....not like I would be driving it around on my carpet going vroom, vroom....so the tracks didn't need to work! LOL
Here are a couple of pics of the finished product:
You can see the rest of them here:
http://public.fotki.com/ScottM/models/zsu-234/
I thought I had some pics of it in progress.....so you can see the extent of the PE. I built it about 3yrs ago I would say. It was my first kit using PE, and first using aftermarket tracks. Didn't think it turned out too badly.
Ahhh found some of the build pics:

Juge75,
impressive work! I see lots of nice drawings in the background, would you be willing to share them with us ZSU fans?
