I want to build a M1IP Abrams representing 1/72 AR, 1st Bde, 2ID in Korea around 1990-1991. Does anyone know which would be the best (any!?) kit to use. It seems all anyone wants to sell are M1A1 and later. The M1IP still had the 105mm main gun, but included several armor protection improvements. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I used the Dragon M1Panther II lower hull with a modified Trumpeter turret and an after market 105 gun for a "Desert Shield" 1990 tank.

Or just dress-up the old tamiya M1 turret, like I did. I used an academy lower hull (before the dragon kit) and Tamiya turret. had to modify and scratchbuilt a couple of things here and there.

Depends on how accurate you want it to be... Ideally, you would mate a M1 hull with a M1A1 turret and add a 105mm gun. A cheap way out would be a Tamiya M1 as well as the turret sprue from a Tamiya M1A1, for the bustle rack.
If you decide to use a M1A1 turret, as per Sabot, you need to rework the blow out panels from the A1's style two to the M1's three. You will also need to remove the CITV mount from in front of the loader's hatch, add the weld lines and the turret jig bolts. The IPs used M1 as well as M1A1 style GPS Covers and used a modified M1A1 mantlet (GAS sight located on the bottom of the mantlet as well as the goose necked lifting mount on the top of the mantlet)
I am looking at using the Panther II hull and a DML M1A1 or AIM turret for mine...

My next question then is....where might I find a Tamiya M1? I've been looking but only find the newer M1A1.
Thanks everyone for your comments and assistance!

Long out of production so ebay or the buy/sell/trade forum is your best bet.
I find the undersized Academy M1A1 turret along with the original Tamiya M1 hull to be a pretty good match up. You need to rework the Academy blast panels on the turret though.
The Academy hull isn't proper because it has the NBC system in it.

Hi mates
but isn't better to add some extra millimeters of plasticard on the turret front of the older Tamiya one (about 7 if I remember well, because the older Tamiya M1A1 w/mineplough was already 4 mm more lenghtened than the older turret and was however too short than the real one) and then upgraded its with some PE? I have done this and isn't a great work to do.

The turret on the old Tamiya M1 is fine or an XM1 or an M1, but is too short for an M1IP. That's why it would be better to use an Academy ot Trumpeter M1A1 turret. The Panther II hull is almost as good as the new AIM and SEP hulls, so it is a good choise for an M1 or M1IP. You just have to come up with some early tracks.

Guys,
I only mentioned the Tamiya M1 kit as a quick & cheap way to get get a IP... I acknowledge that you need a M1A1 turret, from another kit, to actually pull a M1IP off correctly.
Brian Lockwood has a nice M1IP in the works that uses Tamiya hull and turret as well as Dragon grill doors. He posted it on ML about a month or so ago...

Don't get me wrong John. I agree with you about using the old Tamiya kit, but they are hard to come by. Also the Dragon Panther is a good kit and builds into a very nice early M1.

Not all M1IPs began life as an M1IP. The first tank I trained on was an XM1 given the MWOs to make it an M1IP. It got the bustle rack and other cosmetic fittings, but not a new turret. An M1IP could have started as an XM1, M1 or been an original build M1IP. All three would look different here and there. The turret on the old Tamiya M1 is fine or an XM1 or an M1, but is too short for an M1IP. I used a modified gun from a Verlinden M48-M60 update/conversion set #320. I don't know if is still available. I replaced the front half with Aluminum tubes. starting with 3/16, then adding one that fits inside it to make the gun. Then adding one that fits over it for the thermal shield. JB Models.eu makes an M68 105 gun. I have one I plan to use on another M1IP. It doesn't have the thermal wrap, so I'll have to modify it also.

Thanks everyone for your advice and counsel. I've got a Tamiya M1 kit, a Dragon M1Panther, workable T156 tracks, and am awaiting the Acadmy 5 in 1 M1A1. Out of this kluge I hope to create 2ID 1BDE HQ6 circa early 1991. I'll be starting a build log in the next couple of days.
Special thanks to Buckeye for the Tamiya kit. If anyone is a Corvette fan, I've got several kits to give away - send me a PM.

Wouldn't BDE's HQ-6 be the brigade commander's HMMWV? The highest commander to still have a tank would be the battalion commander with a bumper number HQ-66 (or HQ-60 if in 1st Cav Div; like everything else, they just gotta be different).

You're right - it was HQ66....see, that's why I'm on here. While I was assigned there, the Bde commander used a tank from 1/72 Armor Bn when he went forward with the TAC.
Thanks

It was most likely the float tank from the FSB. We kept one of their floats in our motor pool and our sister battalion kept the other.

I also have an IPM1 started. I put the old boxy APU on the right-rear, would that be good to go?

Not really. The rear hull mounted APU was only used in limited numbers about the time of ODS ('90-'91). Most tanks did not have them.

That APU was more common on the M1IP in the late 80s on stateside tanks. They didn't have as big a budget as the units in Europe and needed to save money by conserving fuel. I don't think I saw one mounted on any tank after Desert Storm though.I also have an IPM1 started. I put the old boxy APU on the right-rear, would that be good to go?
