Hi!

Can someone give me a brief overlook of the different colors used by the US on their different kinds of camos on their AFV's? I would like to be given reference preferably to Tamiya colors, but other references are also appreciated.

If the colors have changed over the years, I would also like to know what colors were used in past years, for example in the Vietnam war.

The main color used by the US since the Second World War has been olive drab green. In the 1950-70s, gloss black was mixed with the OD green and a glossy dark OD green appeared to give vehicles a more "parade worthy" look. This was a non-standard color that varied from unit to unit. In the 1970s various camouflage patterns were tried. The 4 color MERDC was standardized in the early 70s to late 80s. The four colors varied based on the surrounding terrain or area of operations. Sometime in the 80s, the fourth color was dropped (usually light sand) and only 3 colors remained. In the late 80s the US began going to the NATO 3-color standard. At the start of the Gulf War, it was faster to paint the tanks overall sand as opposed to any type of camouflage scheme. The overall sand color has become one of our two standard schemes (NATO 3-color being the other).
