I am currently building Tamiya's Kubelwagen Type 82. It is going to be painted in dark yellow. I hope to try the sea salt paint chipping technique on it but have a question about colors. If the overall vehicle is painted German dark yellow, would the color underneath yellow be German grey or something different? In other words if yellow chipped off of the vehicle what color would be visible?
Thanks

I guess it depends on what timeframe you're representing. Primer was red oxide on armored vehicles. Earlier vehicles were grey over that, and in Africa painted dark yellow over that. Later, after they grey was stopped it was just red oxide under dark yellow. I've always read that the desert vehicles would flake right down to bare metal because of the extreme temperature changes in the desert. I'm not an expert so I may have missed a combination, and I'm not sure when Kubels entered service but I'd guess they were around for most of the war and could fit into either category.
