They do look nice but at £55.90 for the LSSC and £63.90 for the sampan from Historex Agents they do seem a bit pricey!
Having said that the LSSC does look nice but is it any better that the old Dragon kit?

I was told at the IPMS Nationals that what you see is what you get in this kit. Everything in the Sampan is what you get.

Isn't the Sampan a re-release? I'm sure I've seen it before in some older FV dios. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.
Jeff: Correct me if I'm wrong, and I don't know much about post 1950 military hardware, but the PBR and LSSC (Light SEAL Support Craft) are totally different vessels. DML released one of the latter (in plastic) back in the '90s though - kit 3301 LSSC of the 1/35 'Nam' Series.

LSSC and PBR are totally different craft. Then DML LSSC aint a bad kit, the detail is lacking in certain areas but it can be easily improved. Its a shame they dont re release it, cos the Verlinden one is way too expensive. I think both of these are re-releases, thats all Verlinden seem to be doing now is re-releasing, which isnt bad as it means some of the better older stuff will become available again.

Looking at the enlarged image of the LSSC, I can see elements of the older Verlinden radio set and the 'Viet Nam Camping ground (or some such) , but the only 'new ' work improving on the DML kit is the rear hull/water jets.
Is the DML kit that rare? I have not looked for one in a while or checked for them on ebay.

They are somewhat pricey but its great to see old stuff cropping up again. It may not be up to todays standerds. But nothing a bit of modelling and careful painting really won't solve.
The Sampan looks really tempting! A dio with a PBR checking it out would be cool.

Funny that both the Verlinden waterline and full-hull LSSCs are the same price --- I would have expected the waterline model to be a little cheaper. Both releases look great, but are pricey. The waterline version is situated in a neat little diorama on the Verlinden site --- wonder if they will release it as a separate base.
I think that the long sampan is a new release (not to be confused with the short sampan released by Verlinden some years ago) and indeed, it does look cool...
And it looks like they have a couple of new-ish Vietnam figure releases, which appear to be milking the old (and somewhat cliched by this point, if you ask me) figures dating back to the earliest Vietnam releases... At least it ain't that hippie looking figure with the beard , long hair and glasses, smoking a pipe! While I was glad for the Verlinden Vietnam figure releases back in the day, they are a bit long in the tooth in my opinion --- Bravo 6 they sure ain't!

Think Verlinden have re-issued these kits because of the recent Bravo-six released stuff?
Anyway, just ordered the long sampan, as the shorter one is actually tiny... The long one has tons of payload, and is much more like the ones I saw on the river on my trip to the Mekong... and has a "longtail" motor, which i'd be too lazy to scratchbuild. Seeing this kit has encouraged me to continue with the huge dio i started three years ago. Time to get the modelling stuff out of storage i think!
Will post pics of the kit contents when it arrives. BTW, got it on sale from Deli-hobby (e-bay store) for 42 quid including postage - compared with 63 quid without postage from Historex here in the uk!

Would be great to hear what your diorama is all about, Richard! What is the subject, what kits, figures, AM are you using?
Soon as I can put together the money I am going to invest in a resin PACV for a 'Nam diorama myself --- indeed, that Sampan and payload might come in very handy (gotta save for that one, too, of course.

Johnny B.

Yo Richard. Does this mean your going to carry on with your diorama?
Posted: Sunday, September 06, 2009 - 08:11 PM UTC
I think so... it needs a re-think, and I need to consolidate the several ideas and dios I had going on somewhat. Just before I moved at the beginning of the year, and all my stuff went into storage, I "won" a huge amount of nam stuff, including Mules, an LSSC, and about twenty Verlinden figures on e-bay and so that stock, combined with the amount of stuff I had already, might mean a different idea or slant for the dio...
I can't remember most of the stuff I was building, so it might me nice just to look through my stash, I'll keep you all posted!
