Pat, most of my bases come from the local yard sales or salvation army. I pick up all sorts of picture frames that work nice. And you can not beat the price's. I even get the occasonal peice of old plaque from the shop that doe's my engraving. Lat one I got from them for free was 12x12 solid walnut with fancy vertical scrol work on the corners. When I get two frames for small vign. that are the same, I do opposing forces , German on one and Russian on the other. Kind of makes a dual set.

improvisation saves a fortune !! specific things sold for diorama materials could usualy be made a lot cheaper or even found if you are observant on park and country walks ..
some modern scenics are however good but the quality ones are expensive
for instance the tufts of dried grass seen used for boggy land can be made from old natural string i now have enough from my d.i.y. shop to last for a million years ( or till i retire ) for a quid
there are a host of other natural materials that can be put to use and for free
bases can be obtained for pennies from charrity shops , junk sales , car boots , in the form of old picture frames , ornament bases , etc etc !!
