Tamiya themselves do a set of winter SS figures for the Schwimmwagen (inspired by the famous photo from the Ardennes) in a special "white box" edition with the figures and the Schwimmwagen together.

Hey Carl,
As Gerald mentioned, here's that Tamiya set that sorta replicates the famous photo from the BOTB.

Tamiya set #35253

Unfortunately, the driver in the set doesn't have the odd leather "flying helmet" headgear as in the photo.
A good set anyway.
Cheers

Hi, I have not found any U.S. distributors of this figure yet, hope to soon as I am also looking for one. Another figure you might consider is by the Bodi #35007, German Truck driver. Good luck in your search. milvehfan

Howdy,
Jaguar makes a whole set of both driver and passenger. You can find this one Ebay real easy. Verlinden has a four man set also. HTH, Ryan

Hi

you could buy the figure direct from MK35 if you still want that one, they have a web shop.

http://www.mk35.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=17&Itemid=1〈=en

Slight downside is they do have a 15 and a half Euro minimum order, but I'm sure you could find stuff to make that up easily.

Hey Carl,
Actually, not too far from the truth !
By that time in the war, the Germans were using a greater and greater numbers of young teenage boys !!
When my Dad's unit started rounding up Heer and SS soldiers in Holland and Northern Germany at the end of the war, many of the ones they captured were 13 and 14 year old kids.
I know a fellow from Hamburg who told me he was a 14 year old in school one day in May or April 1945 and then, along with the rest of his classmates, was in a uniform and carrying a Kar98 carbine the next morning.
He fired his rifle a few times, then surrendered to some Allied soldiers and was put into a POW camp.
Cheers

Many years ago, I made a small vignette featuring a Schwimmwagen and
built a few figures for it. I remember the interior was very tight, and I had
to be very careful not to make the figures too bulky... especially the ones in
the driver seat and passenger seat.

From what I saw in the Tamiya kit, I think those were truer to scale than
other resin offerings from Warriors and Jaguars. Many figures are overscaled
and can make the vehicle look like a "toy."

Many Tamiya figures are scaled to match the average stature in Japan, which makes them on the short end for Europeans, even allowing for the fact that the generation that grew up during the Great Depression were a bit nutrient-starved. In those days, a six-foot tall American soldier would always be nicknamed "Stretch," for his great size--5'8" or 5'9" was quite common during the war. However, if you check with a scale ruler, you'll find many Tamiya figures scale out at 5'6" or smaller. Sometimes sheet plastic shims added at waist, knees and elbows will suffice to make them more presentable, or they can be mixed with some Dragon or Miniart figures to create a variety of heights.
Since the original question was regarding the driver, I recommended the set, since that figure is designed to fit neatly into the Tamiya Schwimmwagen model. The head could always be swapped out for a resin item, if you wish.
