Hey all, I'm thinking about doing a dio of the US airborne landings in Normandy. So far I want to use most of Nemrod's paratrooper sets and Dragon's airborne set. Maybe also some Verlinden sets but we'll wait and see if I feel like making the necessary conversions (heck, maybe even MasterBoxe's set). I want the dio to depict a confrontation between US and German troops in the early morning hours, right after landing.

The problem is I don't know much about the German sets out there, I primarily model US subjects. Could someone point me in the right direction for German troops/MG/Flak wagon or such? I'm thinking a squad sized group of paratroopers could be sneaking/stumbling across a MG team/patrol/Flak wagon but don't know which German sets would be applicable to time or place.

Maybe I won't even have room to include a German unit, but I hope so and want to know my options.
Thanks guys,

Chris

Dragon makes a few figure sets of German infantry that might work. German MG42 heavy machine gun crew (kit 6064) or kit 6084, Luftwaffe field division, Normandy 44, or 6241, Luftwaffe Normandy; 6277, Georgian leigon, Normandy (soldiers are surrendering); 6308, Panzergrenadiers, Arnhem; 6368, 20mm flak gun with crew, for just a few figure options.

For equipment, you could start with a 20mm flak gun. Tristar and Dragon make one, and Tamiya has one being towed by the Krupp truck. There is a flakvierling (quad mount 20mm) made by Tamiya, or the halftrack mounted versions made by Trumpeter and Dragon. There is the SdKfz 251/17 with the single 20mm cannon made by AFV Club and Dragon, which aren't too big. Or you could just have a kubelwagen in the scene. Tamiya makes a nice one. I don't know how big the 88m AA gun is, but Dragon, AFV Club and Tamiya all make that as well.

Hi Chris

You might find this set from Dragon of use. Dragon set 6277.

As the box art says these depict a unit based in Normandy at the time. Made up of foreign volunteers so I believe.

Thanks guys. That helps a lot. Sounds like Dragon kits are the way to go...

Would camo uniforms be appropriate for the night of June 6? Or should I stick with the normal grayish ones?

Most of the box art shows the field gray uniforms. Most photos I have seen from the Normandy invasion show the same thing. One other set I didn't think of is the "Achtung, Jabo! set. Four figures all looking skyward in suprise.

Bunker crews or similar personnel usually only wore field grey.

That's kind of what I figured. From what I know the camo unis where mainly worn by panzer and SS units and that night it was pretty much all infantry and regular units. The only elite unit to be involved that night was a Parachute battalion which I'm not going to show. I'm just going to use a a few AA soldiers and maybe a dispatch rider with his motorcycle.

Steven Zaloga wrote a series Osprey Campaign books detailing the D-Day landings, and exactly who fought who and when on June 6th. For instance, one of the German garrison units in the the landing zones of the US paratroops were German parachute units, so it was airborne vs airborne in the predawn and early morning fighting. Zaloga identifies the specific units involved and the nature of the actions.
This past year, all of these books have been collected in a single-volume, hardback edition for slightly more than the cost of just one of the paperbacks! The title is "Overlord: The D-Day Landings", and it's available discounted for under $19 USD from Amazon, and several Amazon resellers are offering it new for under THREE DOLLARS plus shipping. Has color illustrations and numerous photos.
