anything wrong with just a plain wood base with plain green turf type stuff layed down and thats it? maybe stain my edges with some dark stain or something.

No big deal - it's just not a diorama, it's a base. It does give the vehicle a bit more 'context' than a non-based one.

Personally I think you should just stain the wood and place directly on that. IMO it look better than it being parked on something appearing to be like a putting green ... either conveys lack of skill or effort .. which detracts from the overall appearance. There are those who dont want to do groundwork ... and place on a stained base.
But .... it your vehicle/model ... its ultimatly your choice.
