Academy are planning to release the K9 howitzer which is designed to replace the M109A2. I don't know much about it except that it's an indigenous design, but if you look at the picture, it has a red kangaroo. I found out that it was in competition with a couple of other howitzers to modernize Australia's army. Maybe they won the contract I don't know, but it looks like they will release it with Aussie decals which should be good news for Aussie armour fans. I beieve the K-9 is an ROK development. We seem to spreading our love around when buying military equipment. A good thing in my opinion.

Cheers

When I said it was indigenous I meant Korea because I live here. I think I've been here for too long.

The K-9 has not been selected as the new Aussie SP Howitzer ....it is still undergoing trials.

The contenders were the G-6 Rhino, the PzH 2000, and the K-9. I think only the PzH 2000 and the K-9 are still being evaluated.

If the K-9 enters service in Australia it will be designated as the AS-9.

I would think it will be at least year or two before the selection is announced. Turkey also uses the K-9.

Here's a better image......

I read an article in The Australian (a reasonably respectable national broadsheet) a couple of months ago that stated KMW had pulled out of the bidding. If this leaves the AS-9 as the only contender I'm wondering if the tender will continue.

The SP part of the competition is still going and given the current government and the need for defence to find massive savings to fund 12 Submarines to replace the 6 that we can't crew more than 3 of I'd say they may just quietly decide to not proceed with SP's (again). They just finalised the 777 as the new Medium Arty but i have to question the whole concept and thinking in our army where the Army Reserve Arty units previously equipped with M119/M113 105s are being re equipped with 81 mm mortars. I could understand a heavier 120 or greater mortar but 81 mm?
I suppose 5 km Arty support is acceptable to politicians.
Cheers

The firm I work for does quite a few government tenders, state and federal, and generally speaking even if there is only one submission the tender process will continue. Bear in mind, that just because there is only one submission it doesn't mean the tender will be successful.
