http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/trumpeter/tr02313prev.html

Looks like they have carved a little niche that I hope continues......

Any readily available good resources for this one?
Which German half track hauled this thing.....

Thanks

I've got the Geschützwagen Tiger für 17cm Kanone 72 (Sf) kit. That is a monster! I ordered the aluminum barrel, available from RB Model. It's large enough to use as a baseball bat. I guess that you could use it on the towed piece, albeit, without the muzzlebrake.

Yep, bascally the same gun as in Trumpy's Geschützwagen Tiger für 17cm Kanone 72 (Sf) kit, sans muzzle brake different barrel, and of course the limber added.

Which German half track was able to haul this monster?

From this one pic I found it seems it was towed by an Sdkfz 7. However, the pic is too small to confirm this. It could be a FAMO also but can't really see closely enough to determine. Those who 'specialized' on these halftracks may be able to tell though...

I also planned to build this beast, but it´s not available yet in my shops.

As I know, the Sd.Kfz 9 Famo was the main vehicle for this job.

I found this online:

----------------------------------------------
Specification:

17-cm K 18

Calibre: 172.5 mm (6.79 in)

Length of piece: 8,529 m (27 ft 11.8 in)

Weight: travelling 23375 kg (51,533 lb) and in action 17520 kg (38,625 lb)

Elevation: 0° to+50°

Traverse: on platform 360° and on carriage 16°

Muzzle velocity: 925 m (3,035 ft) per second

Maximum range: 29600 m (32,370 yards)

Shell weight: HE 68 kg (149,9 lb)

-----------------------------------------------

At over 23 tons (UK - long) and at over 25 tons (US - short) in 'traveling mode' it would be hard to believe the Sdkfz 7 would be able to tow this thing. Even the Sdkfz 9's towing capacity of 18T would be a strech. I don't know, either the specs are wrong or when calculating I didn't account for something (or there is another halftrack/vehicle that towed this thing).

Rob

Edit: The same article where I got the above info from says that:

Quoted Text

For short distances both weapons could be towed in one load by a heavy halftrack tractor.

So it could be the Sdkfz 9 (unless there was another heavy halftrack tractor with more muzzle than that one)

The Sd.Kfz.9 (incorrectly called a FAMO because of its maker) had limited artillery duty, but did serve in that capacity. ABER has a two-set PE upgrade option for the artillery version.

The Sd.Kfz.8 was probably the vehicle used to tow this monster. I have no references for it being horse-drawn.

The Sd.Kfz.7 at 8 tons would be out-classed by far. We can't see enough of the towing vehicle in the photo, but I would bet $$$ it's not a 7, which was used for the 88 and the sFH 18.

Maybe Trumpy will bring out an 8, as only the DES resin kit currently exists for that vehicle.

Note: for longer travelling-distances, the barrel gets removed and transported by a special barrel-transporter car.
I don´t know the weight of the gun without its barrel. So I think, then the two vehicles (gun and barrel-car) can be towed each by an SdKfz 9.
But I´m not sure with that.

Hey Joe

The weapon carriage was normally towed by a 12 ton Sdkfz 8. The barrel wich was moved separtely (which was the norm early in the war)was towed by an 8 ton Sdkfz 7.

Later in the war when transport vehicles were becoming more scarce or for short distance hauls the weapon was towed complete by either the 12 ton Sdkfz 8 or the 18 ton Sdkfz 9.

If these vehicles were not avaiable then two 8 ton Sdkfz 7's were coupled together to provide the necessary towing capacity.

The only 12 ton kit available at this time is made by Des Kit and apparently leaves much to be desired especially for the very high asking price.

I just recieved my 17cm and will be hooking it up to a Tamiya 18 ton, unless Trumpeter or Dragon decide to release an Sdkfz 8.

I hope Trumpeter has done a better job on accuracy than it did on the sFH 18. Dragon apparently beats that one by a mile, including the ability to build it deployed.

Hi Bill

What was inaccurate about the sFH18 kit ?

Alan

EDIT....Don't worry I found PMMS's comparison feature. On it's own not bad, it's when compared to the Dragon version it becomes a issue.

Hi, Alan, I have two in my stash and will build them in limber with camo (tree limbs, etc.). They are not bad kits for the price I got them ($19 each from HobbyLinkJapan), but the Dragon kit is really excellent, and if accuracy is your goal, I would go with that one.

Also Trumpeter´s "10cm sK18" kit isn´t accurate, but a compare-kit or "replacement" from Dragon isn´t available yet. (announced was it for one year ago!)

Soeren, it's a great time for fans of German artillery and its prime movers, there are lots of kits coming out. I don't recall all the problems with these two Trumpeter guns, but it seems to me they are better than nothing, and aren't terribly expensive if you wait. If the alternative is resin (like with the Sd.Kfz., then I'll take styrene and either fix the inaccuracies, or hide them in the finished diorama.

Yes, you´re right!
The alternative-versions of the guns (sF18/sK18 and 17/21cm guns) are made of resin and very expensive too.
My 10cm sK18 looks very nice in its dio and I will make some rework with it.

Ahh, the only problem with the 17cm Kanone kit is, that the 3 "spades" are missing. But perhaps one can leave them away.

Hi

Does anybody know if there are any 15cm K18 kits around? If not is it possible to build a 15cm k18 from various kits, if so which ones would you recommend?

Many thanks

Hmm, the 15cm K18 doesn´t exist as a kit. You have to do some scratchbuildung, because its different base.
See the photos here:
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Waffen/Bilderseiten/schwere_geschutze-R.htm

and here:

Hope, this helps.

For those of you who asked about what pulled this gun, I am reviewing the new Nuts & Bolts on the Sd.Kfz.8 and it appears these guns were in 3-piece batteries that were equipped with 7 Sd.Kfz.8s, two for each gun. One pulled the limber, one pulled the barrel, and the battery had an extra half-track in case one broke down.

The Sd.Kfz.8 pulled other guns, including the FLAK 18/26/37, but it was primarily for towing the 15cm and 17cm Kanone guns.
