Hi all,
What colour was the piping on the tunics of Stug crewmen? I wasnt sure if it was red or pink.
Were Stugs classed as panzers or sturmartillerie?
Thanks in advance.

Hey Paul,
The piping or Waffenfarbe would be bright red for artillery.
Waffenfarbe WaffenfarbeStuG's were considered part of the sturmartillerie.

It depends,
Independent heer Sturmartillerie units, were part of the Artillerie, so they had red waffenfarbe. These units used Sturmgeschutze III.
However the Stug III was also used in units that were part of an existing division (fe a Heer or Waffen SS Panzer Division, or a Heer Infanterie Division), as Panzerjagers. In that role the crew had pink waffenfarbe.
Hope that helps.
cheers,
Marc

Would this rule of thumb apply to Recon units in Pumas (etc) as well?

Yes I think so,
The waffenfarbe was dependend on the unit the crew belonged to, not on the type of vehicle the crew manned.
