Hi Guys,

i did a review on these two chaps a while ago

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/review/3847

Thought I'd make a start on them whilst I'm in the mood. Be interested to know what you think of the basic shirt colour!

Some basic paint on:

Hey Al,
These two guys are a couple of the figures I just ordered from Ultracast.
Your paint jobs look good.
I just dug out my copy of Canuck: Battle Dress, Weapons and Equipment 1939-45 Vol. 1.
The section of the book on shirts states " A variety of shirts were worn by Canadian soldiers during WWII, generally khaki in colour, with variations on the collar and pocket details. Canadian shirts, like Battle Dress, were generally of better quality than British clothing".
There's a photo of two Canadian soldiers wearing two styles of shirt, one with a collar and flapped breast pockets, the other collarless with no pockets.
The latter shirt looks spot on with the ones sported by the Ultracast figures.
Although the picture is in BW, these shirts appear to be very much lighter in colour than the BD pants they're wearing.
Your chap's shirt colours looks consistent with the photo.
Very handy book, unfortunately it's probably OOP.
Cheers.

Hi John,

I have the Canadian Soldier and a colour pics in there shows the uniforms much more 'green' than British DB. However I was told that the 'Green' in the book was a bit too 'green' , so I'm trying for something in between.

Officers uniforms are much more brown in the selction of pics.

Thanks

Hi Al,

The officer's uniform in the book you are referring to, more accurately reflects the colour of the Canadian uniform in general. I have the same book and I'm not sure where they found the bronze green uniforms because I have never seen that colour anywhere else.

Hey Al,
The colour looks good, whenever I paint British/Commonwealth uniforms, I try for slight variations so no two are quite the same shade.
As I've told you before, my Dad's recollection was that Canadian BD was a richer, more green colour than the standard British issue.
I don't recall Dad saying anything about his uniform being any different than the standard issue Canadian BD.
Mind you, the Canadian BD came in more sizes and was better quality than it's English cousin.
Being a officer, Dad might have also got his BD fitted and tailored before going overseas.
One thing I have heard from several sources, British troops would barter with the Canadian Quartermasters to get replacement BD's.
Canadian soldiers recovering in British hospitals had to keep an eye on their kit as there was a tendency for their uniforms to "disappear" or replaced !!
Cheers

Hey Al,
Theft of uniforms.........hard to believe but true !!!!
My Dad's driver, Vince, wrote a series of wartime memoirs that he gave to my Dad and are now mine.
Vince related one story about coming down with a severe fungal infection of his feet and having to be treated in a British Military hospital in Hamburg and how he had to sleep with his BD jacket and pants rolled up and tucked under his head to prevent it being "liberated" by some sticky fingered orderly !!!
Apparently a fairly common occurrence with Canadian uniforms !!!
Might make an interesting diorama or vignette.
Cheers

Hi John,

Not hard to believe at all. Soldiers tend to liberate anything useful that isn't nailed down and even stuff that is!

Hey Al,
The shirts look just about right.
I would have made one shirt a bit more faded, a bit less green for contrast, but that's just me !!!
Cheers
