I did it again!! The impulse to buy another kit overcame me and so I bought the M1128 MGS!! So that means I have 4 kits on the shelf. M1A2 SEP Abrams, Isralie Super Sherman, and the 120mm Verlinden Special Forces soldier. What am I thinking!!

That you need to get on the stick and get that stash up to a reasonable size! SOme of us have that many projects on the workbench at any given time.

Dude! Only 4?! I have about 50 unbuilt and about 25 half built kits going right now. Plus a trade in the works. That doesn't include all the countless update, figure, PE, track and tire sets I got laying around, some for kits I don't even own yet. It's a sickness.....

And, I mailed about 40 or so kits to Iraq last year for the troops.

Compare the number of unbuilt kits in your stash to the number of unworn shoes in your wife's closet and your collection becomes justified.

Priceless....

....for everything else there's MC!

I think the tendancy to buy a kit is just natural. Who knows when it will become discontinued. You might read a book like I did and get inspired to try and set the scene and BOOM! They don't have the kit anymore. That just happened to me when I read about the LRDG in Africa. I went looking for the Chevy knowing it is discontinued. (Never know though). I do know that Tamiya is coming out with a new version. Hopefully with more up to date tooling. So, it is better to have on hand then to miss out.

LOL My wife wishes that I only had 4 kits on the shelf. At last count I had 225 kits waiting for my attention.

Seriously...I think I'm a hoarder....but I guess I'm in very good company!
There has to be an underlying psychological reason for the compulsion to buy things we know we will most probably never build.

My father threw away my entire collection (thousands) of HO scale soldiers when I was just a kid. I guess a few of them clogged up the vacuum cleaner. I vowed I would get them all back. Well...I got into 1/32 scale aircraft and 1/35 armor when I was about 14 and started to collect kits and have never looked back...even after a divorce and several trips back and forth across the pond to Germany...my stash has continued to grow.

I usually only buy my kits on sale...but even so I have a huge amount of money tied up in these models. My wife is very understanding but at some point I have to say enough is enough...just not today or tomorrow!

So all of you modelholics...keep on building....Remember all you manufacturers...If you release it..... they will buy.

So when do you catch kits on sale? Seems like I always end up paying full price and if kits are on sale it is always the case that the ones that are on sale are the ones that I don't want.

I'm just a hoarder. Last week my wife made me throw out a container of used and rusty screws that I've had in a drawer for 15 years because she couldn't see why I needed to keep them.

For me, it took literally a THREE-HOUR lecture from the wife to bring me back to reality and to curtail my buying. Believe it or not, I recently spent closed to $500 on the span of a month without even realizing it (granted I didn't buy kits per se but mostly tools and other modeling-related stuff that usually ends up costing a lot more than kits). Boy, to say that this is an addiction is an understatement. Since then, I've tried real hard to stop buying all together but it's pretty hard to do. Actually, I just bought the new Dragon Pak 43/3 L/71 this week as I couldn't resist (but I got the wife on board with it this time ) Being that my wife is extremely careful with her expenses and rarely buys anything for herself it makes it even tougher on me for sure.

Does anyone have a therapist I can be can referred to?

Me personally,i`ve got around about one hundred unmade kits but recently i`ve gone M-113 crazy. At this point in time i`ve got seven of the buggers on the go,chopping and changing bits from one to another to make different examples, this plus TWO 1/32nd Tornados !.
By the way what`s a half finished kit ?,my conscience wo`nt let me start a new kit without finishing what i`m doing at the moment.
My biggest problem at the moment is how do i break it to the SWMBO that i hav`nt got any shelf space left to show my finished models -

I generally buy my kits from:

Greatmodels http://www.greatmodels.com/~smartcart/cgi/search.cgi?terms=Figures_+sale

Squadron http://www.squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?offset=0

Hobbylink Japan http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljsalepage2/?word2=&genre2=All&series2=All&type2=All&scale2=35&maker2=All&DisplayMode=images&randstr=a9facxe8

or eBay and Model Shows...

The IPMS Three Rivers (Pittsburgh) http://ipmsthreerivers.scalewarbirds.com/blog/

show is my biggest source of kits. Most of the vendors there have amazing prices. Last year I got the Tasca Luchs for $30.00 and it retails for at least $54.00 in stores. I probably spend $200.00 a year at the show...but I usually work a bunch of overtime prior to the show so I'm not shorting the household budget.

"and that's all I have to say about that...Lt. Dan"

If I see a kit I want, I just have to buy it. I afraid of a repeat of the Stuart incident.
As in, holding a copy of Hunnicutt's Stuart in my hands and thinking, "Holy crap, I can't spend $90.00 on a book!"

Been kicking myself ever since that day.

It really is a sickness

I agree 100%.
It's not a hobby---- it's a mental disorder.

Dave, I disagree.....the stash is a whole hobby of "collecting" in itself

Mental disorder.....maybe...on a small SCALE

I agree. collecting the kit themelsves is also part of the fun Though now, for some odd reason I have kits' stash, and another stash (that is growing out of control) of PE and such
But let me tell you, there is nothing more satisfying then opening the closet, seeing all those kits and then closing it That way you can tell yourself "hmm, I'm good for the time being". Of course, that won't help you when a new-kit-you-must-have is released, or on sale. So I guess we have something of a disorder

You should have told her you were waiting for them to completly disentegrate and were then going to use them for weathering armour.....

I just had a great expierience a few weeks ago. Went to a model show and actually didn't buy anything!! That was quite an expierience! It proves that it's not an addiction.

Ok, now back to that online store...

That's like going to Oktoberfest and not drinking beer... it's like going to McDonalds and eating a salad...it's just not right...it's unethical...it's....probably a VERY smart thing to do.

I think I'll leave my wallet at home the next time I go to a show....yeah like that's going to happen.

When I was in my 20s I inherited a small collection of unbuilt models from a man
from our model club who died (the man died..not the model club....his wife just gaveall of his stuff away). I couldn't understand how he could just keep so much stuff stashed away and not build it,,,there were probably only about 10 kits! Now I know I'm not going to build all of my stuff before I kick the bucket...I'm working like crazy to finish a lot of what I have....but I gave my wife strict instructions to sell ALL of it on eBay...I even suggested prices for the rare kits (AFV Sd.Kfz. 251- 3 in 1, Cyber-Hobby Tigers, Tamiya Famo, etc.)

Most of our spouses don't know what our collections of unbuilt kits are worth (for good reason!). When my wife finds out that we could have bought a Ferrari instead of me buying a gazillion model kits that just sit there and clutter up the house while collecting dust...there will be hell to pay...luckily for me I won't be around to see the fury.

I prefer to think of it as an insurance policy for her.

Aren't I magnanimous? I think not!
