Hi there

I am interested to know the different Battle Dress Uniforms of British Army fighting in North Africa, can anyone help?

Which Tamiya or Gunze Sangyo colour is good for WW II British uniform and their gears in Desert?

Got some figures from Dragon to work on.....

Hi Rex,

There were a large variety of uniforms worn by the British in the Desert. Which Dragon Set do you have?

I thought the Gunze colours were indicated on the DML painting instructions on the back of the box/or insert? Anyway, not to worry, try here: http://www.hat.com/ColorsWWII.html for a generic colour guide. These are Testor colours which you'll need to convert to Tamiya or Gunze. Have a look on IMPS Stockholm's website for their colour conversion guide.

Hi AlanL & Tarok

DML kits available:
6515 - Allied Assault, Monte Cassino 1944
6605 - British Commonwealth Troops
6390 - British 8th Army Infantry El Alamein 1942

Just wondering whether figures fom 6515 & 6605 kit could be converted for North Africa campaign...

I understand that DML do provide suggested Gunze color on instruction but i heard that uniforms will fade off to a color close to something like Tamiya XF-57 Buff from friends...so interested to know whether fellow members have any idea about this?

Hi Rex,

I would say yes, both kits you mentioned could easily be used in N Africe. The only thing you would need to do would be to switch out the rifles for SMLE and add the long bayonet and ditch the respirators form the Commoinwealth infantry set.

Osprey's The British Army 1935 - 45 (2) Middle East & Mediterranean is a handy reference and gives a good range of the various styles of uniform worn. It would also give you a better idea of the uniform colours.

As the Commonwealth infantry are wearing BD you would need to paint the jackets an appropriate BD colour, but you could get away with varing the colour of the pants. Also check that they are not wearing the Mk III helmet.

I'd probably use the Buff (or similar Vallejo paint - I'm not a fan of brush painting Tamiya) to lighten the colours noted above.

Hi Rex,

SMLE rifles are not in abundance. Italeri did some in their old No 407 accessories set which gets re-released from time to time but Ultracast do do a nice set. I did a review on them here:

so weapons/replacement bayonets shouldn't be a problem. Remember to ditch the Stens and use SMLE or the Thompson .45 SMG instead.
