I have a few questions reguarding the "ranking" on the forums. Ive looked around and ive seen a few people with Marine Ranking and others with just Army Ranking. I was wondering if theres any way I could change mine. Also, is there any special way on getting promoted ?? I post topics and reply and it seems like im still a sgt..
just wondering about a few things..

19Delta, don't get hung up on the rank. It never meant that much when I was in the service it sure doesn't now. I'm a new guy around here and a Private. I remember when that was a big deal hoping to be a "Private Citizian" again someday. Keep making a contribution and the rank will come. Gee, it took me 3 years to make Sgt. in the service. Don't worry about the small stuff, have fun.

If you look under your avatar (the little picture you chose to represent yourself online), it shows that you have only posted 54 time, although we did lose a few posts during the little server problem last month. I lost around 100 posts.
At the bottom of the page there is a link to Forum Help / Rank Info. This has the chart that equates the number of posts to the rank you attain. Some people after they have reached officer rank, petition Jim to give them Marine, Navy, Jedi or some foreign military rank. They also get a chance to have a reserved avatar, one no one else can have (like mine is the little Disney Robin Hood fox).
I don't really have much sympathy for you guys in the double digits worrying about rank. I attained 4 stars at post #2500 and my next promotion will not occur until post #5000. I've still got over 700 posts to go.

Jim told me last week that he doesn't do the special ranks anymore. They take up too much overhead in the database. He's letting those that have them now keep them, but not adding new ones.

ditto Mikes comment. I still do custom avatars for users once they reach officer rank.
If I ever get the time I want to do a huge rank overhaul that will really change fundamentally how the ranking system works. Basically I want to add rank categories (US Army, US Navy, British RAF, Soviet Army, etc). Then I will add some logic that makes it possible for content contributors to be promoted to officer ranks (or they can decline and remain enlisted personnel). This will hopefully give the ranking system a more colorful dynamic range of ranks, add a little national association, and help encourage contributions of content to the site.
So...don't get too attached to your current ranks. I may turn this puppy on it's head at some point.
Cheers,
Jim
