Would a rail road and cobble stone street in France (1930's) be on grade and have wood placed into the road to the top of the rail as here in the U.S. or is there a different set up? Google turned up nothing I could find so if anyone can help, I'd appriciate it. Thanks.

I think its pretty much the same allover Europe. Both level and raised crossings with the street coming up to the tracks. Inside the rails could be wood , concrete or cobbles (usually with some sort of steel L chanel to keep them from moving into the flange way.) Most crossings had guard rails at each end of the track to make sure the wheels would stay on the track and not derail. If the track went down the street ,like a tram , the roadbed might match the street or it could be decorative brick. Hope this helps. Jim
