There has been a buzz going around that Armorama community members would like to see the Current Events forum resurrected. Now I have been around this site for a while and remember the time when there were some "heated" discussions in that forum. At some point certain discussions turned ugly and caused our beloved webmaster to shut this forum down. I think that with certain amount of supervision and having a moderator or two we should be able to have civilized discussions. I have enjoyed the forum very much and would like to have it reinstated? What do you say?

To be honest with you, when the site began I used to use the "latest posts" feature and read just about all posts. Some of the threads did get ugly as you state. I ended opting out of all the off topic ones with the exception of the Soldiers Stories and TV&Movies, and even then I rarely read anything in the Soldiers Stories forum. I moderate TV&Movies so I still read it.

Lately, I've just stuck to the forums I moderate (Armor, Aircraft, TV&Movies) and the General Modeling forum. Of course since I am a moderator, editor and content contributer, I also follow the site support forums. I stopped following some of the valid topics that start running multiple pages (I set my preferences to 30 posts per page). Seems we have a lot of people posting that don't really say anything.

I know Jim was worried about space those extraneous forums used and some of the bad blood that spilled into other forums. I believe he's even considering removing the History Club forum. I don't see him bringing back the Current Events forum, but the decision is his.

With all due respect, if asked for my vote, it would be against bringing back this Forum.

Those discussions went on unmoderated for too long and created a lot of bad blood. I see the site as something more along the lines of modeling - and those discussions had nothing to do with it. Sure, it is easy to opt-out if you don't like what's being discussed there - but when it spills over into the modeling Forums - that's too much and too far.

There are other sites where current events seem to reign supreme, and I think that a good place to keep those discussions.

I agree with what was already said - that "bad blood" seemed to linger and even spread a bit into the model forums - the real reason for this site.

I have a great interest in current events and all things history. One of the better, though often heated discussion sites I've visited is over at History Channel.com There's some great topics being discussed. I have not participated in any... yet, but I do enjoy reading what the world has to say about certain events.

Seems to me that I may have stirred up a hornets nest with this post. This is not what it was intended to do. I have noticed lately people saying they might like to have the forum back but nobody asked the question so I did. I liked the forum myself. Ultimately this is Jim's site and he will do what he thinks is right. Like I stated in my initial post, I would only like to see the forum brought back if it was being moderated and/or supervised accordingly.

After the events that led up to the last removal of this forum, I would not like to see it re-instated. If it is ..... I will never participate or look in to it. At the end of the day this is a modelling site.... there are plenty other sites that deal with current affairs. If something is relevant or even worthy of sharing there is the "(off-topic) junk drawer forum" that can be used.
The latest poll shows there is a world audience participating on here. When something like the Gulf War happens there will always be a difference of opinion and it is too easy to cause offense. It was sad to see the comradery that is the backbone of this site, hurt by slander and even unintentional comments. Let sleeping dogs lie

I too agree with this and my vote would also be 'NO' to bring it back. :-)

Nope! I had thought of it also Marty... just never got to asking... and thank goodness.
I had tried to think of a good reason for it and could not come up with one. The main problem is it becomes to much of a chore to moderate and maintain civility in such a forum. The diverse community we have here has far too many differing opinions on any one subject. It's not a bad thing, just not easily communicated in a forum without someone being offended.

What I do, is while hanging out here waiting to pounce on a question I can answer, is open another IE window and read through the History Channels posts. Some are really quite amusing. Crazy people out there...
