Recently, I’ve been combining my two favorite hobbies, namely model trains and model armor, by scratch building 1:64 scale (‘S’-scale) DODX (Department of Defense Railroad) flatcars with 1:72 military loads.

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsList.aspx?id=DODX

The difference between 1:72 and 1:64 is so slight that it’s almost impossible to notice the difference.

Anyway, while looking for additional prototype pictures of DODX equipment and loads, I stumbled upon the following photo of a red “medium” DODX flatcar (DODX Green=heavy, Red=medium, Yellow=light) transporting a gutted M1 Abrams.

http://www.railroadforums.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/52258

Since I can see no obvious battle damage on this tank, I’m wondering how exactly how this tank might have been so thoroughly “gutted”.

One idea I had was that this tank is being rebuilt and that it was stripped at one location and was being transported to another location for the rebuild when the picture was taken. That being said, there’s quite a lot of rust on this hull and I wouldn’t think that the technicians doing the rebuild would want to let a tank they’re working on get that bad.

I’d definitely be interested in hearing any ideas you might have…

Looks to me like it has been sand blasted down to bare metal and is in the process of rebuild/ transport to another facility and a light coat of surface rust has built up on it.

Its on its way for a rebuild. I forget exactly where the plants are (deep south territory). Anyway, the tanks needing a rebuild start off at plant A, get stripped down to their nuts and bolts and then flat cared to plant B where they reassemble them all shiny and new. National Geographic TV aired a documentary about it (Extreme Machines I think?). Really cool stuff.

I remember seeing that - totally awesome !.I especially liked the part where they hung a complete stripped-down hull up to put it in a sandblasting chamber,i could not believe that you could do it to something that big.

If I'm not mistaken the M1's are rebuilt in Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama.

Isn´t Anniston the place where the M1 gets dismantled and Lima, Ohio is the place where they get rebuilt?

Neinmonia whats wrong with you? how come every conversation you chime in on involves negative comments? If you want to B.S take it some where else. Why dont you you show some models ( if you built any) and quit with the trolling? Making fun of someones airforce? immature..... I dont think you would be so nice if someone made fun of your airforce

Calvin,
I would like to second your sentiments. I think this is a perfect example of why there is a "Hide User" selection on the tool bar. Let's see....... No real name, no real info on his profile, acid on the tongue, and I'm guessing he's fairly young and full of piss and vinegar (or something along those lines). I'm sure he'll respond intelligently to this post......

Thank you…

Once I finish the “finished” and ‘up-armored’ tanks and HMMWV’s, I’m thinking that I could make a few flatcars of “stripped” tank hulls. This would allow me to have one train pull the hulls to one of the factories on the club layout and then pull the finished tanks out at a later time (simulating the completion of the work on the tanks).

Since, to complete a single car, I need to scratch build the flatcar itself and then build anywhere from four HMMWV’s, to 2 M1A2 Abrams per car, it’d be a while before I would be finished with this project and be able to move on to the next one (presumably the sandblasted tank hulls).

I would just like to add one comment without stepping on any toes but they do not sand blast the hulls, the steel shot blast them. They have one of largest spinner hanger shot machines in the world.

You are right of course. I saw the show on Tank Overhall or whatever it was where they showed the verticle shot chamber as well. Typo on my part. Thanks for the clarification.

Thomas,
You are correct. They strip them down to basic components at Anniston, ship the hulls & turrets to Lima Tank Plant for rebuilding into either M1A1AIMs or M1A2SEPs. I have also seen the Hulls/Turrets moved by flatbed trucks. Impressive.
