During WW2 Italian cities were target of many air bombing raids.
Shelters were build by the State, but also many found excape in the basement of the building where they lived.
One of the precaution taken, was to enable emergency rescuers (fire dept., paramedics and such) to immediately locate those shelters should the building actually being hit and destroied.
Thus big arrows marking emergency exits (Uscite di Sicurezza in Italian, shortened in U.S.) were painted on the outside walls usually near trap doors or windows near the basement.
In the years, many of those arrow have just faded away, or been repainted, but some still survive nowadays and here are a fiew pics of them which I found in Milan (or on the net).
This arrows, different in shape and colour, are easy to make and could add a touch of realism in any diorama based in Italy.
Hope you enjoy.
