I've been putting together some parts and after market to detail a Vietnam era M106 and I'm a little stumped on the radios.
The Tamiya kit has some interesting looking radios but I can't quite figure out what they are supposed to be. A site I came across hinted at M106s having AN/VRC 8 or 10 with the AN/UIC 1. Given the role of the M106 I wasn't sure if it would have the same radio outfit an M113s of the era.
The older Eduard set for the M106 has some new faces to detail the radios while the newer Eduard interior set has a part to build an AN/VRC 46 (at least I think that is what it is supposed to be).
I found an interior photo of an M106 that showed the AN/VRC 46 but it was most likely taken in the late 80s or early 90s.
So I guess what I need to figure out is:
Do I use the Tamiya radios with the Eduard faces?
Use Academy's AN/VRC 64 set up from their M113 kits?
Or do I use the AN/VRC 46? Verlinden?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I'll be posting photos in a week or so once I get started.

There's a picture in Zaloga & Green old "US Infantry Combat Vehicles Today" (1984) that shows a post-Vietnam M106 fitted with a AN/VRC-64. I believe such a configuration should be OK for Vietnam...
Edit : according to some info I've found here (on page 37) an AN/VRC-13 could be used with an early war M106...

Being the source for that, the radio specified in the 1965 edition of FM 17-36, on divisional cavalry units, specified the AN/GRC-125 as the radio in the M106 in the Divisional Armored Cavalry Troops. The 1963 manual specified the AN/VRC-13 for the M106 in the same unit type. In the source I used for the Tank Battalion, it didn't have the radio fit for the M106s in the Battalion mortar element. These could easily have been different as well.

I knew the name on the PDF rang a bell to me I've missed the mention of the AN/GRC-125 on page 40

Just checked the 1964 FM for Tank units up to Battalion (FM 17-15), and the M106s also were equipped with the AN/GRC-125 in that.

Thanks guys. That's a big help. Guess it leaves room for some options....or another build.
Joe, that's an impressive document you created.

Its one of my hobbies these days. You can find more on Orbat.com here, but they're already out of date and have some errors in them that I've since changed.
The most up to date ones can either be found through the TO&E Yahoo group here (there actually a "Modern" sub-group where the files are stored here) or at Fields of Fire Reloaded here (at the bottom of the thread).
