Anybody ever put together the Tamiya German Soldiers at Field Briefing kit? How did you like it?
I'm planning a winter, maybe christmas, diorama and am thinking about using that kit.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

I built this kit before, i think its good (tamiya standards). It has some details like the dog and heater, maps etc. Yep, I used it for an otto carius tiger dio in winter of Narva.

Cheers

yeah, i agree with "k". Its pretty decent for a tamiya kit. no "major" fit issues and has good details on weapons/ gear.

cheers,

Thanks guys!
I think I will get the set. As soon as i finish my current project, of course.
My imagination seems to come up with ideas faster than I can build them.

Good figures for Tamiya-standard indeed. I used them for my 251/2-build.
Just loose the pointing commander. He looks physically disabled. No neck and an odd face...

I agree with you about the commander. The rest of the figures are pretty decent for a Tamiya set. A big potential for conversion.

Cheers.

Thanks guys! As soon as I get my hands on these figures I'll probably see what you guys are talking about with the pointing guy.

Just to echo...it's not a bad figure set. The commander's neck is a bit odd and is way to thick for his build. You could sand down the neck to thin it out. I went with white glue and tissue to make him a scarf.

or.......................if you're feeling realy froggy you can buy an aftermarket head set from...let's say... Legend Productions, Hornet, Ultracast, etc. and really make the guy look good.

I use the Legend sets a LOT! You can get them very cheap on eBay and they look great. Legends head set #3 has the officers with the peaked and "crusher" caps seen on a lot of German officers. I agree with the others that the Tamiya kit is pretty good.

You won't go far wrong by using Hornet replacement heads for .

Here is a link to a pdf which shows all the range in one handy document which you can save to your PC. Even zoom in for closer looks. Kindly done by their UK (or wordwide if you pay the postage) distributor Historex.
Hornet heads

Alternatively look at Roger Saunders 's site direct but he doesn't sell direct anymore.

Justin,
If your going to mix any figures from other manufacturers into your scene, Check the sizes of their various weapons and equipment against each other (especially gas mask holders).
Although you'd think that MP44s would be the same length in 1/35 no matter who made them variations can occur.

Thanks James! Those are some really nice sets, but I'm going for more of a winter scene with lots of snow. I need to make up for the fact i rarely get a good winter snow where I live.
Thanks Alan, that is one very useful document. I'm really going to have to save up some extra money to buy a couple sets.
Tom, I know what you mean about scale differences. I once used some spare Italeri parts with a Tamiya kit and the Italeri was way too big!

I built that kit as well. I loved it, everything that came along with was very useful. I also used a kit which had German soldiers smoking (cant remember which one is was though) and used those two kits together with nice results.

Thanks Tony! I know what you mean about the equipment! I can't wait until it arrives in the mail so i can use the heater. haha. Was the german soldiers smoking a DML kit? I think Ive seen it somewhere.
I notice youre in North Carolina and are USMC, are you by any chance stationed at Camp Lejeune? My brother is headed there in January.

Cheers!

Hey Tony, my brother is headed to Lejeune in January and Afghanistan in June. He's an MP, he's done a couple tours to Iraq and then was stuck at Quantico for a while. 2nd Mar Div is at Lejeune right? Anyway, thanks for your service and get home safe. I've got a lot of admiration for you guys over there!

Hey Alan, that's a sharp kit. I just picked it up maybe fifteen minutes ago from my hobbystore lol.

...don't forget these guys are Battle of the Bulge figures - they are using US rain gear, Colt pistols..and Lucky Strikes! The Tamiya kit is not too bad considering most Tamiya figures are fairly naff. The heater is cool, dog's a bit goofy looking, comes with printed newspaper too. I especially like the guy kneeling with overcoat - comes in handy for lots of applications.
I have to admit I also still like the really old Tam German Soldiers at Rest set with the guys eating bread and sausages, etc. Of course they are not in winter gear though....

That set mixes in perfectly for what im doing.

And yes that old tamiya kit is a favorite of mine. I built it once and I want to build it again sometime and do a better paint job on it

There's also this figure kit. It has two winter gear Germans lighting up. The other two figures could easily be used for another project.
