Apparently the EMP-35 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erma_EMP-35) was the most used French submachine gun and I found these pictures of its use:
Is this leather pouch the guy on the last pic is touching used for magazines or was there another pouch?

It looks like you're right about that. I found some pictures of normal French officers who have the same thing and they aren't carrying an SMG. Could anybody help me find the correct ammunition pouch?

Definitely not a magazine pouch, because while the French had confiscated around 3000 Erma MP35s from Republican soldiers fleeing Spain, they only recorded 1500 or so magazines for them. So the Groupe Franc members seen in these photos usually had only 1 or 2 at the most and just stuck them down their shirts. Osprey's French Army 1940 Volume 1 describes this situation. I'm sure when these weapons were turned over to the Germans they were glad to supply 9mm ammunition and the right magazines for them.
