Not to be a jerk but in the first photo, the guy with the radio, the wheel on the other side is off the ground......

Still looks great though.

Nice photography also....

Hi Jon,

Excellent work. The only thing I woudl have changed would be the odd different head for a bit of variety of headgear.

Very busy looking scene and the finish is 1st class.

Cheers

Great work Jon. I think what I like about this dio most is the layout of the figures and the really natural posing. It really tells the story very well, and an excellent choice of figures.

The photography is also excellent and really helps do the diorama justice (photography is one of my weak points!).

Hey Jon,
Excellent job on your diorama.
The only thing I'd point out is that your Sherman shouldn't have applique armour patches on the hull sides.
The late model M4A3 Sherman with the 47 degree hull front had "wet" stowage for the ammo bins in the hull sponsons and did not have applique armour.
I can tell from the tracks with the extended connectors that you used the old Tamiya M4A3 that mistakenly included the applique plates as an option in the instructions.
Otherwise, everything looks well set out.
Cheers

Hey jjumbo,
Thanks for the tips, I happen to have another of the Tamiya Sherman #35250 kits laying around and was getting ready to build it. What exactly is meant by 'wet stowage' ? Besides the wrongly placed applique armour is there anything else in this kit which should be changed/ altered to create a more perfect Tamiya M4A3 Sherman ?
Thanks again for the heads up in my obessive quest to build the 'perfect' Sherman and any additional advice you could offer relating to the Tamiya kit would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jon,
really like your build, the figures are just great, the tanks great & overall outlay is really really good. I like the way you have the 3 groups to look at, the Sherman, then the 2 groups of figures to keep your eyes moving along. I'm inspired to get mine built & into paint now.
Wet stowage is basically this, the ammo was kept in boxes that had liquid in them so if they were hit by a shell then they wouldn't catch fire. I can't remember the names of the liquids but I'm sure somebody else can help, all my references are out in my shed, if nobody posts the answer then tomorrow I'll go get my books and let you know.
Great dio, I'm inspired now to get mine finished, thanks.
Kenny.
P.S. Who made the figures? I recognize some of them & they would be handy for future build plans.
Thanks again,
Kenny.

Hey Kenny,
Thanks for the words of encouragment, the figures are a mix of Alpine, Warriors and Verlinden. If you can post any pics at this thread of the liquid storage references that woud be great.

Hey Jon
A busy and colourful diorama for sure!
The 'wet' stowage was a feture of the internal ammunition arrangement and would not necessarily concern you unless modelling an interior.
The crank handle on the rear overhanging plate should be removed as the M4A3 was not crank started as per the M4 and M4A1...
Oh and about any further tweaks for accuracies' sake, I wouldn't worry too much as there are a few but not immediately obvious unless you looked for them
Try some additional horizintal scratching of the whitewash more so than vertical; as you could appreciate the tank movement would lend itself to brushing against underbrush, other vehicles, rubble, buildings etc. Also areas of high foot traffic on the hull and turret as the whitewash afteall was generally field applied and thus lacked a luscious quality finish.

Jon

Great build, though I second what has been said about the applique armor. Your photography is great as well, it looks cold in those pics.

I built my Tamiya M4A3 with the Formations F077 update, it offers most of what you need, apart from PE-light guards and such. Check it out here. Well worth the price!

Cheerio!

Thanks Stefan, we are thinking alike as I was eyeing that very kit yesterday. Does tit come with sponson fillers or did you make your own ? And speaking of Formations what do you think of the Late High Bustle 75mm Sherman Turret, Kit F097 for use with the Tamiya kit- unnecessary ?
Finally, what is your choice for Sherman PE- the pricey Aber set ? and speaking of PE, does anyone here use one of the PE bending machines[ like the one made by Mission Models] for using PE ? If not how do you manage the bending of small r tricky PE parts ?

Nice work - I love the interaction between the 6 figures. I get the impression there's more to this dio though. Any more pics?

Jon,

The set comes with sponson fillers, as well as everything you see on the pic and some things you don't (like a really nice exhaust deflector). Most parts are available seperately. Also included are headlights with MV lenses.

I never used F097 but considering the quality of their products I wouldn't hesitate buying one. Necessary or not? Couldn't say, sorry.

As for PE, I have a few of the Finemolds sets in my spares box. I know you can get them at hlj (and probably a horde of other places as well). I don't have a bending machine, but am on the lookout for a cheap one. For now I just use tweezers and a steel ruler. But I don't work too much with PE (especially big parts).

HTH!

Cheerio!

Yep, The Sherman Wet Stowage thing is right but, for the sake of Jon's sanity and a great piece of work, this is the crews' second Sherman. The first was a Dry-Storage and lit up like a Christmas Tree so they'll take anything they can get now. Plausible.
Nice, nice piece of work!

On another note, do we have any members in China that can track this spammer down and help put the straightening iron in his lower intestinal tract?
