The truck was originally designed to be a puller/pusher combination to move ICBM missiles. It was then adapted for other roles including towing aircraft, towing tanks, and recovery.
The box on the back of the truck can be used to carry weights so that it maintains traction while pushing/pulling heavy loads.

As you say, this truck is mainly used to tow aircraft (up to 200 tons) :
The square box in the rear is used to carry cast iron ballast (up to 16 tons) to improve traction.
