Dear friends,

I am new to making Shermans. I have built some 30 odd Panzers and some T-34s. I use Gunze for most of my work and always mix my own German WWII colors after 7 long years of "learning" and I am v happy with the results.

Now, I started modeling Shermans recently

I always run into trouble with Shermans and T-34s. It seems that I cannot mix monotone greens and ODs, had become my nemesis.

a) How do you mix your OD. I gave up on using AB from OD from Tamiya, always too dark. The spray cans ODs are nice, but the colors lack pre-shading.

Pls give me some tips to mix a brighter and nice looking OD for Shermans.

Hi
There is an existing discussion in the painting section on OD for Shermans etc.

There are a number of recommendations there for lightening Tamiya OD, which is a very good match for US OD.

Tamiya Buff or Dark Yellow can be used to lighten Tamiya OD quite successfully.

Good Afternoon to you all,

Kiong,

Garth is advicing you very correctly...

Please, take a look at this article written by Steve Zaloga:

OLIVE DRAB by Steve Zaloga

Exactly: it seems that Tamiya OD "needs" to be very lightly lightened with the colors that Garth mentions... currently I´m employing Buff...

One thing I'd like to add about mixing OD, Some of the darkness of the paint and also the color batch and weather has to do with the shade of the paint. I have seen several picts of vehicles that after battle damage has been repaired, a patched or replaced area will be a little darker than the rest of the vehicle. After OD has been in the weather for a time it does tend to look a little lighter.

Olive Drab has no green in it, and this is where most people go astray.
Olive Drab is a mixture of Yellow Ochre and Black. varying the ratios of these colors will vary your shade. Primary Yellow will lighten and brighten it significantly.
