Model masters dullcote
Posted: Saturday, July 19, 2003 - 12:16 PM UTC
Hi Guys. I bought a bottle of model masters dullcote yesterday and I need to know how to spray it successfully. I mean how does one thin it ..... if it needs thinning? Could I thin it with humbrol enamel thinners? All help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

I use the MM Acryl thinner and thinning isn't required.

I recommend thinning the dullcoat. It isn't necessary, but the MM Acryl dullcoat will leave a hazy looking film on your model if it is put on too thick. I thin 1:1 with any alcohol based thinner and use multiple thin coats to impart the dull texture without too much buildup.

Thanks for your input guys, but I dont think this is acrylics. I think its more of a lacquer. It says on the bottle... Mattlack/dullcote/cote mat. 50 cc/ml. No 1560. It also has a flammable warning. The label is grey with a black square with the information and also has a black lid. If this is a lacquer, what can i dilute it with that might be accessable easier....... it will be more than a week before I can get back to that hobby shop for the proper thinners! Thanks again

Most hardware/DIY stores care laquer thinner. It should work, but be aware that the stuff is strong. The fumes...... #:-) #:-) #:-)
Just be careful to get good venitlation and not to let it get on any rubber gaskets in your AB. Also, you probably don't want to use your best brushes with it, either. HTH

MM dullcoat (black label) is a lacquar sp?, use lacquer thinnner.. MM Acryl Dullcoat (1oz) can be thinned with rubbing alcohol... Try the Polly S Acrylic dullcoat...it seems to be 'duller' then the MM versions

Actually my patience ran thin ...... so I sprayed it direct from the bottle with about 3 drops of Isoproponal stirred in and it worked. Its not that thick anyway.
I can only say it work brilliantly. I was very happy with the results. I misted on a very light coat and thats all it took.
I have had mixed results from Humbrol matt varnish ...... some gloss patches left. Yesterday I bought the humbrol bottle of matt cote as well. Probably wasted as I will use the model master again..... Im happy with the results!!
Thanks to all you guys who replied. I appreciated your help!!

My prime thinner is buck a gallon paint thinner form the hardware store. Works great for enamel, Dullcote/Glosscote or tube oils. I have the remains of a can of Testor's airbrush thiiner form a paint lot I found at a yard sale. I don't se any difference in performance, just in price.
