A quick search using a webpage brought me an interesting result.
One of the vehicles served also in the NVA (former east german army) as an "anti-ammunition-vehicle". I can not translate that, It´s a german text.
I would translate the type of vehicles as "radio-electronic breakdown station".
There were several types available, as I read.
Thanks for the information!
greetings and happy new year...

Was this used to prematuring set off artillery rounds? Or to stop them from detonating?

Apparently there is one in the Duxford collection, captured from Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War. The caption on the photo below suggests it carried jamming devices to prematurely set off artillery fuzes.

Here are two more pics of the GT-MU (aka SzPR-1) :
There's even a short video here (and some specs) :

Ambulance variant :
I believe the GT-MU is based on the GAZ-73 tracked carrier, or maybe it's just the same

Yes, I read on a german webpage, one of the variants is for "detonating incoming artillery rounds in the air", at a safety distance... using special frequencies.

Yeah, I thought it looked like one of those dirty little F-ers. I always hated having to deal with them, although I always wondered how effective they would be in battle.
Pretty neat. I wouldn't mind having a kit of one.

Hello,
first I wish you a happy new modeling year !
Concerning this vehicle I made a little walkaround some years ago with the one displayed in the Saumur armor museum.
Just pay a visit to my site in the real ones section and select the signals category (this was my best guess at the moment considering that jamming is part of signals)

Just to complete Olivier's walkaround pics. I think it's the ambulance variant :
