I have the Dragon 1/72 Challenger w/ bar armor and would like to finish it in British armor sand. All the pictures that I've seen w/the bar armor look to be a shade of green. were these ever deployed in a sand color?

I was going to give a simple answer of yes, but thought better of it and decided to check for myself.
I can only find pictures of the main vehicle in green with the thermal netting in sand plus a few of the counter measure devices in sand

The only finish is in green. I'd use a half and half Tamiya NATO Green and Field Grey. Unfournately only operation Tellic Challengers like Tayimas desertised Challenger II are in the desert paint scheme.

Hi
Having spoken to a freind of mine who was a tankie out there in 2005, the rule of thumb was that they stopped using the desert sand colour scheme after Telic and went over to the single tone green with the bar and extra armour packages, the anti IED antenna that were fitted were still in the desert sand. Just thought id let you know as you said about black and green. As far as hes aware, there were never any Challies with the extra armour package painted in desert sand although he wouldnt swear on the bible about it. Also i think i might have some pics of challies deployed with the full package as well as the RWS.
Hope that helps.

According to a friend of mine at Bovington the first sets of bar armour seen in use were attached out of the box and they were the standard Green. The Block armour on the turret and hull sides were however painted to match the MBT.
One or two evidently were seen operating with the Dozer blade on the front and of course the armour had to be removed to facilitate this.

Ossie.
Another fast phone call and your correct.
Two dozer sets were available but were never fitted, however one crew did choose to paint the armour initially but left the bars as it was deemed a waste of paint and time.
Many photos now show the frame on the nose being the armour sand but the blocks Green.
No doubt it will all be removed and stored and if and when brought back into use all Green.
